Napier.-Early part fine, but latter half of month cold and showery, with prevailing southerly winds, but light; maximum rain
recorded on 26th, 1.69 inch. Maximum temperature, 76°; minimum, 44°.

Wellington.-Very small rainfall during this month; pleasant showers occasionally, the maximum fall recorded on 15th and
21st, 55 inch for previous 24 hours. Winds prevailed from N.W. and S.E., frequently changing; strong on 6th, 12th, and
22nd, N.W. High barometer on 8th, 30-547, weather wet and cold from S.E., and stormy at times; on the 9th the barometer
reached 30-757, the highest reading yet recorded, fine and bright after rain, barometer fell during day slowly.
Maximum temperature, 71.0°; minimum, 42°.

Wanganui.-Remarkably fine and pleasant weather prevailed, with light S.E. and N.W. winds; frequently calm; no rain
recorded. Maximum temperature, 77°; minimum, 36°.

Nelson. Generally fine weather throughout the month, maximum rain registered on 18th, 1.07 inch; prevailing N.E. and S.E.
winds, at times strong. Maximum temperature, 73°; minimum, 36°.

Cape Campbell. Cloudy weather, with fresh breezes from S.E. and N.W.; small rainfall, the maximum recorded on 18th,
39 inch. Frequent changes of temperature: maximum, 75°; minimum, 48.9°.

Christchurch.-Fine, with occasional showers, maximum fall on 24th, 38 inch; prevailing easterly winds, strong on 17th, other-
wise moderate. Maximum temperature, 71.7°; minimum, 36.7°.

Bealey. On the whole, fine weather; small rainfall, maximum recorded on 29th, 1.090 inch; prevailing N.W. winds; gale on
22nd from that quarter, with rain; eight days of fog. Maximum temperature, 68°; minimum 29°.

Hokitika. Rather dull, close showery weather, at times pleasant; maximum rain on 14th, 1.77 inch; wind generally moderate,
and prevailed from the eastward; fog on 6th. Maximum temperature, 67.9°; minimum, 40.3°.

Dunedin.-Fine, with occasional light showers; wind variable, and frequent calms; maximum rain on 23rd, 72 inch. Maximum
temperature, 72°; minimum, 37°.

Queenstown. Fine weather, except on 17th and 23rd, when heavy rain fell, 1.33 inch and 1.32 inch having been recorded;
rather dull days, but pleasant; snow fell on hills on 29th and 30th; fog on 19th and 20th; light winds, chiefly from N.W.
Maximum temperature, 72·1°; minimum, 36.2°.

Southland. Very bright fine weather; warm days during early part and end of month, though frosty nights; little wind and
variable; maximum rain recorded on 17th, 45 inch.
Maximum temperature, 77°; minimum, 32°.

GENERAL REMARKS.

Very small rainfall for this period, at some stations considerably below the average. The temperature throughout was much
higher than usual; and a high atmospheric pressure prevailed, on the 9th reaching to 30-77 inch at sea level, with fine bright
pleasant weather. The winds were moderate, and generally easterly. Altogether remarkably fine and mild for time of year.

Earthquakes:-Reported by Observers, Wellington, 19th, at 3 a.m., slight; through the Manager, Telegraph Department, at
Opotiki and Maketu on 14th at about 2.30 a.m., strong; and on 17th at Wairoa, Hawke Bay, at 7.15 a.m., smart; also on 25th
at Wanganui at 11.5 p.m., long and smart.
