NOTES FOR JANUARY, 1875.

Mongonui.---Fine weather generally; heavy rain recorded on 1st, 2.08 inches; strong gale on 1st from N.E., and on the 2nd
and 3rd stormy from N.W. to S.W.; otherwise wind moderate, and prevailed from N.W. and S.W.; fog on 16th. Maximum
temperature in shade, 86°; minimum, 55°.
Auckland.---Strong gale on 1st and 2nd from N.E., shifting to W.; low barometer; heavy rain, 77 inch recorded on 1st; the
maximum for month; remainder of month tolerably fine, though showery towards the end; prevailing S.W. wind, and
strong generally; fog on 21st. Maximum temperature, 86.9°; minimum, 52.2°.
Taranaki.---Fine dry weather generally; the maximum rainfall registered on 2nd, 99 inch; pleasant showers; prevailing
westerly winds and light; thunder on 29th. Maximum temperature, 79°; minimum, 44°.
Napier.---Weather fine, and at times very hot, with prevailing N.E. wind and light, except on 2nd and 3rd, when it blew strong
from that quarter; on night of 28th wet set in and continued raining till end of month; light changeable wind; on 29th,
1.78 inch rain recorded, the maximum for the month. Maximum temperature, 91°; minimum, 52°.
Wellington.---Dull close wet weather on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, wind N.W. and strong, followed by a succession of bright, clear warm
days, with prevailing N.W. winds and very dry, often stormy, especially on 6th, 7th, 8th, 23rd, 24th, and 26th, at times very
hot and oppressive; fine nights; on 28th and 29th heavy rain from S.E. and cold, 1.06 inch recorded on the 30th, the
maximum for the month; lightning on the night of 1st; fog bank on nights of 21st and 22nd to N.E., partially obscuring
moon; on the whole very fine summer weather, though rather too dry. Maximum temperature in shade, 81°; minimum, 51°.
Wanganui.---Rain in beginning and end of month; the maximum fall occurring on 29th, 1.10 inch; otherwise fine bright
weather, with N.W. winds generally strong, especially on 25th; thunder on 10th. Maximum temperature, 86°;
minimum, 46°.
Nelson.---Fine weather with the exception of a few days at the beginning of month, when it rained heavily, also thunder on 3rd,
wind N.E.; over 5, inches of rain in three days, 2.70 inches recorded on 2nd, the maximum; very warm at times;
prevailing N.E. winds and light. Maximum temperature, 92°; minimum, 42°-the greatest range for many years.
Cape Campbell.---Very dry weather; strong dry westerly gale on 9th; prevailing W. and N.W. winds, and strong during latter
part of month; maximum rain recorded on 2nd, 65 inch. Maximum temperature, 81.6°; minimum, 53.0°.
Christchurch.---Pleasant weather throughout, with light occasional showers; small rainfall, the maximum recorded on 2nd, 1.09
inch, nearly the total for month; prevailing N.E. wind and light; hail on 25th. Maximum temperature, 85-2°;
minimum, 41-4°.
Bealey.---Very warm close weather; heavy rain, 2.18 inches recorded on 27th, the maximum for month; some bright pleasant
days; prevailing N.W. wind and at times fresh; thunder on 14th. Maximum temperature, 82.4°; minimum, 38-4°.
Hokitika.---Wet weather generally and warm, at times bright; winds principally S. W., maximum rainfall registered on 27th,
2.74 inches; thunder on 3rd, 14th, 25th, 26th; fog on 22nd. Maximum temperature, 72.5°; minimum, 45-9°.
Dunedin.---Changeable weather throughout, with low atmospheric pressure; frequent showers, the maximum fall recorded on
2nd, 1 inch; winds moderate and generally from southward; thunder on 14th. Maximum temperature, 72°; minimum, 42°.
Queenstown.---Calm sultry weather with a good deal of rain, the maximum fall on 7th, 2-36 inches; winds N.W.; thunder on
7th and 16th; snow on hills on 24th and 26th; fog on 22nd. Maximum temperature, 84-9°; minimum, 43°.
Southland.---A wet month and generally oppressive; maximum rainfall occurred on 22nd, 1.20 inch; prevailing S.W. and W.
winds, and strong at times; thunder on 4th, 5th, 14th, 18th, and 28th; hail on 5th. Maximum temperature, 84°;
minimum, 38°.

GENERAL REMARKS.

On the whole, fine pleasant summer weather; the rainfall is over the average for the same period in previous years, but fell
principally in the early and latter parts of month; wind prevailed from westward, and with few exceptions, was moderate; at
times extremely warm weather experienced. Earthquakes reported at Napier on 18th, at 1 a.m., slight; and at Wellington on
the 4th, at 6:30 p.m., also slight.
