NOTICES TO MARINERS.

No. 11 of 1874.
Customs Department (Marine Branch),
Wellington, 27th May, 1874.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from
Queensland and Western Australia, are pub-
lished for general information.

JULIUS VOGEL,
(in absence of Commissioner of Customs).

ENDEAVOUR RIVER.

In consequence of the narrowness of the channel,
and the want of available space for swinging within
the Port, masters of vessels bound for the Endeavour
River are cautioned not to enter without a pilot.

If when they arrive off the port the pilot is not
available, they must either stand off and on until he
is able to get out to them, or anchor off the mouth
of the river in six fathoms, being careful to keep
Walker Point open of Monkhouse Point. They
must also have warps in readiness for mooring by
the stern, if necessary.

Sailing vessels visiting the port should be provided
with good long lines and handy kedges, as, during
the S.E. trades, vessels always have to be warped out
of the river.

A Signal Station will shortly be established, from
which the necessary directions will be given to
vessels arriving off the Endeavour, and warping
buoys will also be laid down to facilitate the move-
ments of vessels in and out of the port.

G. P. HEATH,
Commander R.N., Portmaster.

Department of Ports and Harbours,

Surveyor-General's Office,
Perth, 15th April, 1874.

THE following communication is published for the
information of masters of vessels trading to and
from Champion Bay, Western Australia.

MALCOLM FRASER,
Surveyor-General.

Brig "Centaur," Champion Bay,
26th March, 1874.

SIR,—I beg leave to report a reef which I passed
on my passage from Fremantle. This morning, while
steering for Moore Point, N.N.W., breakers were
reported on the port bow. Being, as near as I could
judge, about five miles outside the coast reef at the
time, I consulted my charts of the coast; 3, the
latest, is corrected (1872) by H.M.S. "Clio." I called
Mr. Victor's and Mr. Forrest's attention to it, and
we found that it is not marked. I took the bearings
of the north end from the ship, centre of the Break
West, distant 1½ mile, Mr. Forrest's Trig. Station J
N.E. by E.E., distant about eight miles, the low
black point Port Grey N. by E., distant twelve miles;
wind at the time blowing strong from S.S.W., with
heavy sea. From the mast-head I could see the coast
reef quite plain, and the reef above-mentioned to run
N.E. and S.W., I should say about three miles in
extent, breaking heaviest at the extremes. Trusting,
Sir, that you will take notice of this for the benefit
of shipmasters,

I have, &c.,
ANDREW L. EDGAR,
Master of the "Centaur."

To the Surveyor-General, W.A.
