Governors of the said College-and (together with
certain other persons) to represent the Province of
Nelson: And whereas the said Francis Wemyss
Irvine has resigned his office as such Governor, and
it is expedient that a successor to him should be
appointed:
Now therefore, I, Sir James Fergusson, Baronet,
the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand and its
Dependencies for the time being, as the Visitor of
the said College, and in pursuance and exercise of
the power vested in me as such Visitor by the
hereinbefore in part recited Act, do hereby appoint
OSWALD CURTIS, of the City of Nelson, Esquire,
to be a Governor of the said Nelson College, in the
room of the said Francis Wemyss Irvine, and as such
Governor to represent the Province of Nelson.
Given under the hand of His Excellency the
Right Honorable Sir James Fergusson,
Baronet, a Member of Her Majesty's
Most Honorable Privy Council, Governor
and Commander-in-Chief in and over Her
Majesty's Colony of New Zealand and its
Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the
same, at the Government House, at
Wellington, this nineteenth day of
August, in the year of our Lord
one thousand eight hundred and seventy-

SIR, I have the honor to transmit to you, for in-
formation in the Colony under your Government, a
copy of an Order of the Queen in Council of the
5th instant, extending to French vessels the advan-
tages held out by "The Merchant Shipping Act
Amendment Act, 1862," to ships of foreign countries
adopting the rules for the measurement of tonnage
which obtain in this country.

THE QUEEN'S MOST EXCELLENT MAJESTY IN COUNCIL.
WHEREAS by "The Merchant Shipping Act Amend-
ment Act, 1862," it is enacted that whenever it is
made to appear to Her Majesty that the rules con-
cerning the measurement of tonnage of merchant
ships, for the time being in force under the principal
Act, have been adopted by the Government of any
foreign country, and are in force in that country, it
shall be lawful for Her Majesty, by Order in Council,
to direct that the ships of such foreign country shall
be deemed to be of the tonnage denoted in their
certificates of registry, or other national papers,
and thereupon it shall no longer be necessary for
such ships to be remeasured in any port or place in
Her Majesty's dominions, but such ships shall be
deemed to be of the tonnage denoted in their certifi-
cates of registry, or other papers, in the same manner,
to the same extent, and for the same purposes, in, to,
and for which the tonnage denoted in the "Certifi-
cates of Registry of British Ships" is to be deemed
the tonnage of such ships: And whereas it has
been made to appear to Her Majesty that the rules
concerning the measurement of tonnage of merchant
ships now in force under "The Merchant Shipping
Act, 1854," have been adopted by the President of
the French Republic, and are in force in the French
dominions:
Her Majesty is hereby pleased, by and with the
advice of Her Privy Council, to direct that the ships
of France, the certificates of French nationality and
registry of which are dated on or after the 1st day
of June, 1873, shall be deemed to be of the tonnage
denoted in the said certificates of French nationality
and registry.
