Description of a Trade Mark.
A paper label having printed thereon an oval-
shaped figure about three inches and one-tenth of
an inch long, measured longitudinally, and about two
and a half inches broad, measured transversely, with
a border about three-tenths of an inch wide, made by
three lines printed in black running round the figure;
the ground between the outermost and the middle of
these lines being about one-tenth of an inch wide,
and plain white, with the words "This label is issued
only by Bass & Company," in small Roman capitals
about one-twentieth of an inch high, printed in black
thereon at the head of the figure; and were a straight
longitudinal line drawn across the label at a trifling
distance below the apex of the figure of a diamond
shape upon said label, and hereinafter mentioned,
the letter "T" of the said first word "This" would
be found to be on the left side of the said line,
and the letter "Y" of the last word "Company"
would be found to be on the right side of the same
line, and the words "Brewers, Burton-upon-Trent,"
in small Roman capitals as before, printed in black
thereon at the foot of the figure; and were a straight
longitudinal line drawn across such label immediately
over such last-mentioned words, it would measure
about one inch and seven-tenths of an inch, and
small circles in outline printed in black upon the
spaces between these several parcels of words, the
circles on the left side of such outer margin number-
ing twenty, and the circles on the right side numbering
nineteen; the ground between the middle and the
innermost of these lines being a little less than two-
tenths of an inch wide, and shaded black by a number
of right lines drawn very close together, and radiating
as it were from the centre of the figure, and on this
ground, printed in black, a line of double loops
attached to each other running round it. The space
inside this border being also oval in shape, with a
white ground, is interlaced with figures, coloured pink,
which figures consist of rows of figures about two-
tenths of an inch high, like balusters, supporting very
small hexagons drawn in outline in pink, running
across the figure, and upon this ground the words
"Bass and Co.'s Strong Burton Ale," in Roman
capitals about one quarter of an inch high, printed
in black round the head of this inner oval, and
occupying about one-half of its circumference, and
immediately below these words, in the upper part of
this inner oval, a figure of four sides, of a diamond
shape, printed in red, about one inch and two-
tenths of an inch long by about nine-tenths of an inch
broad, with the figure "1" about half an inch
high, placed perpendicularly in the centre of this
diamond, and appears in white relief, and also
on the diamond, immediately below this figure "1,"
appears the words "Trade Mark," the word "Trade"
being placed above the word "Mark" in small
Roman capitals about one-sixteenth of an inch high,
printed in black on the diamond at the lower end of
it, so that such words may be situated at about the
middle of this inner oval transversely, and immediately
below this diamond, fso as, together with the said
words "Bass & Co.'s Strong Burton Ale," to enclose
the diamond, a facsimile of a signature "Bass & Co.,"
written in the usual Italian style, printed in black
straight across this inner oval, and under the letters
"ass" of such signature of " Bass & Co." is printed in
black a dash or stroke of about half an inch in length.
