NOTES FOR FEBRUARY, 1873.

Mongonui.—Wet, unpleasant, and stormy weather generally; winds changeable, but prevailed from S.E.; especially stormy
on 6th and 7th, with thunder and rain, thunder also on 14th and 21st. Maximum rain on 14th, 1.64 inch for previous twenty-
four hours. Maximum temperature in shade, 84°; minimum, 55°.

Auckland.—Excessive rain, maximum fall recorded on 23rd, 2.11 inches; winds strong, and prevailed from N.E. and S.E.;
violent gale from S.E., with rain on 7th and 8th; thunder on 22nd; atmosphere oppressive, though breeze frequent. Maximum
temperature in shade, 77°; minimum, 52°.9.

Taranaki.—Remarkably dry, hot weather; strong S.E. winds on 3rd, 4th, and 5th, otherwise winds moderate, and prevailed
from S.E.; thunder on 1st and 8th; greatest rainfall recorded on 14th, 074 inch. Maximum temperature in shade, 81°;
minimum, 53°.

Napier.—Most miserable weather throughout the month, scarcely a day fine; winds moderate and variable, though
chiefly from S.E.; greatest rainfall on 10th, 1.96 inch for previous twenty-four hours. Maximum temperature in shade, 76°;
minimum, 51°0.

Wanganui.--A succession of fine southerly weather, with small rainfall; winds moderate, rather strong from S.E. on 16th;
fog on 28th; maximum rain recorded on 9th, 0.46 inch. Maximum temperature in shade, 77°; minimum, 44°.

Wellington.—Very fair bright pleasant weather, with slight showers, principally during early part of the month; very
small rainfall, maximum only 0:50 inch, recorded on the 9th; very hot at times, though pleasant breezes from S.E., from which
quarter the wind prevailed; rather stormy on 13th from N.W. Maximum temperature in shade, 75°; minimum, 49°5.

Nelson.—Very fine, and remarkably dry; strong S.E. gales in early part of month, from which quarter it prevailed; maximum
rainfall on 2nd, 0.35 inch. Maximum temperature in shade, 84°; minimum, 48°.

Christchurch.—Fine weather, very little rain; maximum fall recorded on 2nd, 0:37 inch; strong N.E winds first part of
month; wind prevailed from this quarter. Maximum temperature in shade, 75°3; minimum, 43°4.

Bealey.—Very fine, with remarkably small rainfall; maximum for month being only 47 inch on 14th for previous 24
hours; strong winds on 11th, 13th, and 14th from N.W., and on 18th and 24th from N.E.; otherwise winds moderate, and pre-
vailed from S.E.; fog on 1st and 8th. Maximum temperature in shade, 80°5; minimum, 36°.

Hokitika.—Remarkably dry weather; slight rain in middle of month, but otherwise fine and bright; light winds prevailed
from S.W. and N.W.; maximum rain on 14th, 0-55 inch for previous twenty-four hours. Maximum temperature in shade, 71°4;
minimum, 47°.

Dunedin.—Generally fine and dry during month, very small rainfall, maximum fall recorded on 18th, 0-174 inch; winds
light and variable; thunder on 13th. Maximum temperature in shade, 77°; minimum, 42°.

Queenstown.—Extremely dry throughout, no sudden changes of any kind, greatest rainfall registered on 19th, 0.03 inch;
winds very light, and prevailing from N.W.; frequent calms. Maximum temperature in shade, 82°; minimum, 40°.

Southland.—Dry hot weather, very slight rainfall, the maximum fall being 0.54 inch recorded on 14th; winds light, and
prevailed from N.W.

GENERAL REMARKS.

Excessive rain at some of the northern stations, with strong S.E. winds, but otherwise the weather was remarkably fine and
dry, with light northerly winds; in the South, easterly winds with greatly reduced rainfall, especially in mountainous districts.
Earthquakes occurred at Wanganui, 5th, 6:30 a.m.; 10th, 5.51 p.m.; 15th, 6.57 p.m.; 18th, 6.15 p.m.; 22nd, 5-30 p.m.;
23rd, 5 a.m.; 24th, early in morning; 25th, 9.30 a.m.,—all slight; at Marton and Foxton on 10th, at 10:50 p.m.
