thence by a straight line to the junction of the Wairua
and the Mangakahia Creek; and thence towards the
North-west by the said Wairua River to the com-
mencing point.

WAIPU DISTRICT.

This district is bounded towards the North-east,
South-west, and North-west by the Mangapai District,
hereinbefore defined, from the Tauraroa River to the
north head of Ruakaka River; thence towards the
East by the sea to the south-eastern angle of the
Parish of Waipu; thence towards the South by the
southern boundaries of the Parishes of Waipu and
Mareretu to the south-western boundary of the last-
mentioned parish; thence towards the South-west by
the south-western boundary of the said Parish of
Mareretu, and by the Manganui River to its junction
with the Tauraroa River; and thence towards the
North-west by the said Tauraroa River to the com-
mencing point.

A PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS by a Proclamation made under "The
Resident Magistrates Act, 1867," on the
twentieth day of January, one thousand eight hundred
and sixty-eight, and published in the New Zealand
Gazette, of the twenty-third day of January in the
same year, in pursuance and exercise of the powers
vested in him in that behalf, the Governor did proclaim
and declare (among other things) that the limit of the
jurisdiction of the Resident Magistrate's Court consti-
tuted for the Wangarei District, as in the now reciting
Proclamation mentioned, should, from and after the
twenty-second day of January, then instant, be ex-
tended to fifty pounds: And whereas by a Proclama-
tion made under the said Act, on the twenty-second
day of March instant, in pursuance and exercise of
the powers vested in him by the said in part recited
Act, the Governor abolished the said "Whangarei Dis-
trict" so constituted as aforesaid, as from the first day
of May next, and in lieu thereof, did constitute and
proclaim the "Whangarei Heads District," the "Whan-
garei District," the "Mangapai District," and the
"Waipu District," as the same are respectively
described in the Schedule thereto, to be Resident
Magistrates' Districts as from the said first day
of May next, for the purposes and within the
meaning of the said Act: And whereas by the said
Act it is enacted that it shall be lawful for the
Governor, from time to time, or at any time, by
Proclamation in the New Zealand Gazette, to declare
that the limit of jurisdiction of any district shall be
extended to fifty pounds, or to one hundred pounds,
as he may think proper, and thereupon such Court
shall have power to hear and determine any case
in which the amount of the debt or damage claimed
shall not exceed the limit fixed by such Proclama-

tion, and which might have been lawfully tried in
such Court, in case the amount of the debt or
damage claimed therein had not exceeded twenty
pounds: And whereas it is expedient that the
jurisdiction of the Resident Magistrates' Courts
within the said last-mentioned Districts should be
extended to the limit of fifty pounds:

Now therefore, I, Sir George Ferguson Bowen, the
Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in pursuance
and exercise of the power and authority vested in me
by the said Act, do hereby proclaim and declare that,
from and after the said first day of May next, the
limit of the jurisdiction of the Resident Magistrates'
Courts for the said

WHANGAREI HEADS DISTRICT,

WHANGAREI DISTRICT,

MANGAPAI DISTRICT, and

WAIPU DISTRICT,

severally constituted as aforesaid, shall be extended
to Fifty Pounds.

WHEREAS by "The Contagious Diseases Act,
1869," it is, among other things, enacted that
the said Act shall extend and apply to such districts
as the Governor shall from time to time, by Procla-
mation published in the New Zealand Gazette, declare
to be subject to the provisions thereof, and the limits
of such districts shall, for the purposes of the said
Act, be such as are defined in such Proclamation:

And whereas it hath been represented to me that it
is expedient that the district hereinafter described
should be declared to be subject to the said Act as
hereinafter mentioned:

Now therefore, I, Sir George Ferguson Bowen, the
Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in pursuance
and exercise of the power and authority vested in me
by the said Act, do hereby proclaim and declare that,
from and after the day of the publication hereof in
the New Zealand Gazette, all that district within the
Province of Canterbury, in the said Colony, which is
hereinafter particularly defined, shall be subject to
the provisions of the said Act: And in further
pursuance and exercise of the power and authority
vested in me by the said Act, I do hereby define the
limits of the said district for the purposes of the said
Act, as follows:-

All that part of the said Province bounded on the
Northward by the River Hurunui; on the South-
westward by the Rangitata and its tributary the
Clyde River; on the Eastward and South-eastward
by the sea; and on the North-westward by the
County of Westland.
