Adelaide, 10th January, 1872.

THE following Notice to Mariners is published for
general information.

ARTHUR BLYTH,
Treasurer.

NOTICE is hereby given, that on and after the
fifteenth of January, 1872, a bright light will be
exhibited from the Cape Jaffa Lighthouse, from
sunset to sunrise.

The Lighthouse is situated on a reef off Cape
Jaffa (Cape Bernouilli on the Admiralty charts) in
Latitude 36° 57′ 30″ South,
Longitude 139° 40′ 20″ East.

The light is bright, of the first order, on the
holophotal revolving dioptric system, having eclipses
every thirty seconds, and will be visible all round
the horizon to a distance of twenty miles. The
height of the focal plane is 100 feet.

Vessels approaching or passing this light should
not come under sixteen (16) fathoms.

By order,
GEO. E. DEMOLE,
Marine Board Offices,
Secretary.
Port Adelaide, 5th January, 1872.

GREAT NORTH-EAST CHANNEL, TORRES STRAIT.

A DANGEROUS sunken rock lying in the fairway
of the Great North-east Channel, is reported by
Mr. Jardine, the Police Magistrate at Somerset.

The rock is described as being about 20 yards in
diameter, with 6 feet of water over it at low water,
and lying E.S., 1½ mile from Saddle Island.

To avoid this danger, vessels after passing Bet
Islet should haul well to the southward, giving
Saddle Island a wide berth, before steering to pass
Ninepin Rock, which is steep to and may be left on
either hand.

G. P. HEATH,
Commander, R.N.,
Portmaster.
Department of Ports and Harbours,
