Proclamation published in the New Zealand Gazette,
may, as to parts within the North Island of New
Zealand, define the roads and the boundaries thereof,
and the bridges and ferries, which shall be and be
deemed to be roads, bridges, or ferries, as the case
may be, under the provisions of the said Act, and any
such Proclamation may include existing roads, but no
such roads or parts of roads shall be included if they
are, in the opinion of the Governor in Council, roads
which should be constructed by the Superintendent
and the Provincial Council of the Province wherein
such roads are situated (as well as new road lines);
and the Governor from time to time may revoke or
alter any such Proclamation: And whereas in the
opinion of me, Sir George Ferguson Bowen, Governor
of New Zealand, and the Executive Council of New
Zealand, the road defined in the Schedule hereunto
is not a road which should be constructed by the
Superintendent and the Provincial Council of the
Province of Auckland:

Now therefore, I, Sir George Ferguson Bowen, the
Governor of New Zealand, in exercise and pursuance
of the power and authority in me vested by the said
Act, do hereby proclaim and declare that the road
within the North Island of New Zealand described,
and the boundaries whereof are set forth in the
Schedule hereto, and which road is delineated on a
plan numbered I., deposited in the Office of the Public
Works Department at Wellington, in the Province
of Wellington, and thereon coloured red, and which
plan is authenticated for the purposes of this Procla-
mation by the signature of the Honorable William
Gisborne, the Minister for Public Works, shall be
and be deemed to be a road under the provisions of
the said Act.

Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir
George Ferguson Bowen, Knight Grand
Cross of the Most Distinguished Order
of Saint Michael and Saint George,
Governor and Commander-in-Chief
and over Her Majesty's Colony of New
Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-
Admiral of the same; and issued under
the Seal of the said Colony, this thirty-
first day of July, in the year of our Lord
one thousand eight hundred and seventy-
one.

SCHEDULE.

Takapau to Manawatu Gorge.

The road commences at Takapau, in the Province
of Hawke's Bay, at a point marked A. on the plan
referred to in the body of this Proclamation, and
bearing 11Β° 15' to Trigonometrical Station Henton,
and 51Β° 25' to Trigonometrical Station Grant; and
it runs thence in a general south-westerly direction
through Native lands to the Manawatu River; thence
across that river in a general south-westerly direction
through the Tuatua Block or Manawatu Block No. 6,
and the Rakaiatai Block or Manawatu Block No. 7,
and the Te Ohu Block or Manawatu Block No. 3, to
the clearing known as Te Whakaroatapu; thence
over that clearing in the same general south-westerly
direction through the Piri Piri or Manawatu Block
No. 2, across the clearing Piri Piri, and through the
Umutaoroa Block or Manawatu Block No. 1, to the
clearing known as Tahoraite, being portion of the
Native Crown Grant Block, Tahoraite, No. 2. The
road then crosses that clearing in a general south-
westerly direction, and runs thence through the belt
of bush dividing Tahoraite from the clearing known
as Oringi, and across that clearing in the same general
direction through the belt of bush dividing it from
the clearing known as Matahiwi, forming part of the
Native Crown Grant Block of the same name, and
across that clearing in a south-westerly direction to
the Ahuaturanga Block No. 2 at Pukerangi; thence
through that block in a general south-south-westerly
direction to the Pukenui-ote Stream; it crosses that
stream, and runs thence in a general south-south-
westerly direction to the stream Mangamanaia, crosses
that stream and runs thence in a general south-south-
westerly direction to the junction of the River Man-
gatua with the Manawatu at the eastern end of the
Manawatu Gorge, and thence down the north side of
the Manawatu Gorge to the site selected for a bridge
over the Manawatu, at the end of the line from
Foxton towards Napier, as proclaimed on the twenty-
fifth of April, 1871.
The whole of the road line, from the commencement
to the termination, is delineated by a red line on the
plan referred to in the body of the Proclamation, and
marked No. 1; the breadth of the line of road being
1 chain, and the estimated length being about 42
miles.

A PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS by "The Immigration and Public
Works Act, 1870," it is amongst other things
enacted that the Governor, from time to time, by
Proclamation published in the New Zealand Gazette,
may, as to parts within the North Island of New
Zealand, define the roads and the boundaries thereof,
and the bridges and ferries, which shall be and be
deemed to be roads, bridges, or ferries, as the case
may be, under the provisions of the said Act, and any
such Proclamation may include existing roads, but no
such roads or parts of roads shall be included if they
are, in the opinion of the Governor in Council, roads
which should be constructed by the Superintendent
and the Provincial Council of the Province wherein
such roads are situated (as well as new road lines);
and the Governor from time to time may revoke or
alter any such Proclamation: And whereas by a
Proclamation bearing date the fifth day of May, one
thousand eight hundred and seventy-one, made in
pursuance of the said Act, and published in the New
Zealand Gazette of the thirteenth day of the same
month, and numbered twenty-seven, the road therein
mentioned was proclaimed and declared to be a road
under the provisions of the said Act: And whereas
by reason of certain inaccuracies in the Schedule to
the said Proclamation it is expedient that the same
road should be proclaimed anew, in the manner and
form hereinafter appearing: And whereas in the
opinion of me, Sir George Ferguson Bowen, Governor
of New Zealand, and the Executive Council of New
Zealand, the road defined in the Schedule hereunto
is not a road which should be constructed by the
Superintendent and the Provincial Council of the
Province of Auckland :

Now therefore, I, Sir George Ferguson Bowen, the
