in the Colony on the departure of his vessel, so
that the expense of his maintenance and passage
home had to be borne by Her Majesty's Government
instead of being charged to the owners of the vessel.
In order to avoid the recurrence of a similar case,
I have, at the instance of the Board of Trade, to
request that you will instruct the Magistrates in the
Colony under your Government that they are, in
future, on a proper request from the master or owner
of the ship, or his agent, to direct the Provost
Marshal, or other officer in charge of seamen im-
prisoned for desertion, to cause such seamen to be
conveyed to their vessels under proper custody, as
required by the 248th section of the Merchant Ship-
ping Act.
