RULE UNDER "THE NATIVE LANDS ACT, 1865."

Approved this twenty-third day of March, one
thousand eight hundred and seventy-one.

WHEREAS it is enacted by "The Native Lands
Act, 1865," that it shall be lawful for the
Chief Judge of the Court established under the said
Act from time to time to make Rules, and the same
from time to time to revoke or alter, for regulating
the sittings, practice, forms, and procedure of the
Court, and for the government of all Surveyors and
other Officers officially connected with the Court,
and all Rules so made or altered shall, when approved
by the Governor, have the same force and effect as if
they had been inserted in the said Act: And
whereas under the said recited power certain Rules
were made by me on the twenty-sixth day of March,
one thousand eight hundred and sixty-seven, and
approved by the Governor on the twenty-eighth day
of March, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-
seven, and it is expedient to alter one of the Rules so
made and to make another in lieu thereof:

Now therefore, I, Francis Dart Fenton, Esq., the
Chief Judge of the said Court, in pursuance and
exercise of the said power and authority, do hereby
revoke the rule numbered thirteen of the Rules made
as hereinbefore recited, and do make the following
rule in lieu thereof:--

RULE.

APPEARANCE BY COUNSEL OR AGENT.
Parties may appear by Counsel or European
Agent only when the assent of the Court, or any
Judge thereof, is previously applied for and obtained
for such appearance. The Court may at any stage
of any proceeding order the discontinuance of the
employment of Counsel or European Agent.

This appointment dates from the 25th March,
1871.

FREDERICK WILLIAM RIEMENSCHNEIDER, Esq.,
to be Deputy of the Registrar of Marriages, and of
Births, Deaths, and Marriages, for the District of
Wanganui, as the same is defined in Proclamation of
10th day of October, 1870, and published in New
Zealand Gazette, No. 56, of 11th day of October,
1870.

SIR, β€”A case has arisen in one of the West Indian
Colonies in which, through the insufficiency of the
Certificate of Discharge granted by the committing
Magistrate, under the provisions of the 248th section
of "The Merchant Shipping Act, 1854," a seaman,
who had been imprisoned for desertion, was detained
