✨ Naval Observations and Appointments
THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE. 19
Governor and Commander-in-Chief in 5th November, 1870, at 10 a.m., passed 3 miles west
and over Her Majesty's Colony of New of position of reef (?), Lat. 12° 30′ S., Long. 176°30′
Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice- E., without seeing any signs of it.
Admiral of the same; and issued at 7th November, 1870, at 3 p.m., passed 4 miles west
Wellington, this tenth day of January, of Lat. 15° 31' S., Long. 176° 11' E. (position
in the year of our Lord one thousand assigned to Onaseuse or Hunter Island). Nothing

tions of certain Islands recently visited by H.M.S. BENJAMIN S. JACKSON,
"Rosario." Navigating Lieutenant.
W. GISBORNE.
"Clio," at Auckland,
21st December, 1870.
YOUR EXCELLENCY,-I beg to forward for your
Excellency's information, and with a view to promul-
gation in New Zealand if you think fit, the accom-
panying particulars received from Her Majesty's
ship "Rosario," regarding the positions of certain
Islands visited during her cruise to the Gilbert
Group.
I have, &c.,
F. H. STIRLING,
Commodore and Senior Officer.
His Excellency Sir George Bowen,
G.C.M.G., &c., Governor of
New Zealand.
H.M.S. "Rosario," Ovalau,
Fiji Islands, 17th November, 1870.
SIR,-I beg to forward a list of the positions of the
Islands visited by the "Rosario," during her cruise
to the Gilbert Islands.
I would here observe that Byron Island is about
1º west of the position assigned to it on Chart No.
2,464; and also that the small island which lies almost
midway between the position of Independence and
Sophia Islands, and may be either, would be especially
dangerous to a vessel passing this longitude at night.
I have been informed by several people used to
navigating these seas, that Onaseuse or Hunter Island
does not exist, and this is borne out by our observa-
tions on the 7th instant.
I have, &c.,
HENRY J. CHALLIS,
Commander.
Commodore F. H. Stirling,
Senior Officer, H.M.S. "Clio,"
Australia.
