HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to
make the under-mentioned promotions, and
appointments, viz. :

In the Auckland Militia.
Ensign Roger Hill to be Lieutenant. Date of com-
mission, 3rd June, 1870.
Ensign John Richard Rushton (Opotiki Rangers
Rifle Volunteers), to be Ensign. Date of com-
mission, 17th June, 1870.

In the Taranaki Militia.
Ensign William Johnson to be Lieutenant. Date of
commission, 18th July, 1870.

In the No. 3 Company, Auckland Rifle Volunteers.
James McCosh Clark to be Captain. Date of com-
mission, 11th July, 1870.

In the Nelson Artillery Volunteers.
Thomas Garrard to be Second Lieutenant. Date of
commission, 5th August, 1870.

In the Waimea Company, Nelson Rifle Volunteers.
Arthur Wix to be Captain. Date of commission, 14th
May, 1870.

In the Motueka Rifle Volunteer Cadet Corps.
Honorary Ensign Edmund Parker to be Honorary
Lieutenant. Date of commission, 5th March,
1870.
Fitzroy Horneman to be Honorary Ensign. Date of
commission, 5th March, 1870.

In the Canterbury High School Rifle Volunteer Cadet
Corps.
Andrew Davies to be Honorary Ensign. Date of
commission, 10th August, 1870.

In the Oamaru Rifle Volunteers.
Ensign John Locke to be Lieutenant. Date of com-
mission, 28th June, 1870.
George Sumpter to be Ensign. Date of commission,
28th June, 1870.

In the Port Chalmers Naval Volunteers.
Lieutenant James Blain Robertson to be Captain.
Date of commission, 10th June, 1870.
Sub-Lieutenant William Goldie to be Lieutenant.
Date of commission, 17th June, 1870.
William Alexander Wilson to be Sub-Lieutenant.

Volunteer Act, 1865," lapsed:-

IN THE SUPREME COURT OF NEW ZEALAND.

REGULE GENERALES, JULY 1870.

BY virtue of the powers vested by law in the
Judges of the Supreme Court,β€”
It is ordered by the Judges of the said Court,
that the following General Rules shall come into and
be in force on and after the 1st of October, 1870.

Dismissal of Action when Plaintiff does not proceed
to Trial.

  1. In case the Plaintiff in any action in which issues
    of fact are to be tried by a Jury shall not proceed to
    trial at the Circuit Court at which such trial shall
    have been appointed under Rule 130 to take place,
    the action may, at the discretion of the Court, on the
    motion of the Defendant, made within fourteen days
    after the last sitting day of such Circuit Court, be
    dismissed for want of prosecution, unless it shall
    appear to the Court that the delay is in part imputable
    to the Defendant, or that there is some other reason-
    able excuse for it.

Interest on Judgment after Verdict.
2. In all cases where Plaintiff or Defendant shall
become entitled, by verdict of a Jury, to the recovery
of money, the judgment ultimately entered up upon
such verdict shall, for the purpose of entitling the
successful party to interest, be deemed to relate back
to the earliest time at which, but for intermediate
proceedings, the judgment could have been entered
up after verdict.

  1. The like rule shall apply to judgments, in actions
    for money, upon special cases stated either with or
    without pleadings, not reversed upon Appeal or Error.

Serving Rule Nisi for New Trial.
4. In all cases of motion for a new trial, or in arrest
of judgment, within Rule 185, any rule nisi granted
upon such motion shall, in order to operate as a stay
of proceedings, be drawn up and served before the
period has elapsed at which the party for whom the
verdict is found may proceed to tax costs and enter
