Secretary of State for the Colonies, is published
for general information.

SIR,-I transmit to you, by direction of the Secretary
of State, copies of Instructions issued by the Board
of Trade to Officers in the British Possessions abroad,
relative to the wages and effects of deceased Mer-
chant Seamen.

INSTRUCTIONS TO OFFICERS IN BRITISH
POSSESSIONS ABROAD.
WAGES AND EFFECTS OF DECEASED MERCHANT
SEAMEN.
THE British Government have agreed with the
Governments of France, Denmark, Sweden and
Norway, and the North German Confederation, to
deliver to their respective Consuls-General in London
the wages and effects received by the Board of Trade
under the provisions of "The Merchant Shipping Act,
1854," of Seamen belonging to those countries who
have died on board British merchant vessels; and
these Governments have on their part agreed to
deliver to the nearest British Consul the property of
British Seamen dying on board their merchant vessels,
or on shore in their territories.
The Officers are therefore requested to report to
the Board of Trade the particulars of the deaths of
such British Seamen.

THE following Report by His Honor the Superin-
tendent of Otago, on the Stone Graving Dock
in course of construction at the Port of Otago, is
published for general information.

Wellington, 18th August, 1870.
SIR,-With a view to its becoming generally known
that vessels of Her Majesty's Navy as well as of the
mercantile marine, frequenting these seas, can be
docked and repaired in New Zealand, I have the
honor to request that His Excellency the Governor
may be advised to call the attention of the Lords
Commissioners of the Admiralty to the stone graving
dock now rapidly approaching completion at the
Port of Otago, the dimensions of which are as
under:--
Depth of water at dock sill, ordinary tides 19 ft. 6 in.
Ditto ditto, spring tides ... 21 ft.
Ditto ditto, neap tides ... 17 ft. 6 in.
Length of dock ... ... 330 ft.
Width, above ... ... 68 ft.
Ditto, below ... ... 41 ft.
Ditto, where ship's bilge would be ... 43 ft.
I may add that the dock will be ready to take in
vessels in January, 1871.

has been pleased to assent to the same.

HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to
appoint
SKELTON GEORGE ROWLEY
to be Deputy of the Registrar of Marriages, and of
Births, Deaths, and Marriages, for the District of
Cobden, as the same is defined in Proclamation of
the 24th day of March, 1870, and published in the
New Zealand Gazette, No. 16, of the 25th day of
March, 1870.

IT is hereby notified, that a Writ issued for the
election of Members of the Provincial Council
of the Province of Canterbury for the District of
Selwyn, was returned on the 11th of May last, with
an indorsement to the effect that
EDWARD JOLLIE, of Christchurch, Freeholder, and
DE RENZIE BRETT, of Kirwee Villa, Freeholder,
were duly elected.
