streets and bridges, and to lay down and place pipes,
conduits, and service pipes, and to make and construct
other works for supplying the City of Wellington
with Gas, and for other purposes relating thereto,
and to the objects for which the said Company has
been established.
Copies of the Bill will be deposited in the Private
Bill Office, on or before the commencement of the
Session.
It is intended to apply for the following powers on
behalf of the Company, that is to say:-
That it shall be lawful for "The Wellington Gas
Company, Limited," to open and break up the soil
and pavement of the several streets and bridges,
within the limits hereinafter mentioned; and to open
and break up any sewers, drains, or tunnels, within
or under such streets and bridges, and to lay down
and place within the same limits, pipes, conduits,
service pipes, and other works, and from time to time
to repair, alter, or remove the same; and also to make
any sewers that may be necessary for carrying off the
washings and waste liquids which may arise in the
making of the gas, and for the purposes aforesaid,
to remove and use all earth and materials in and
under such streets, to erect any pillars, lamps, and
other works, and to do all other acts which the Com-
pany shall from time to time deem necessary for
supplying gas within the limits hereinafter mentioned,
doing as little damage as may be in the exercise of
the powers hereby granted and making compensation
for any such damage to the person or persons affected
thereby.
That it shall be lawful for the Company, from time
to time, to enter into any contract with any person
for lighting or supplying with gas, any public or
private building, or for providing any person with
pipes, burners, meters, and lamps, and for the repair
thereof; and also from time to time to enter into any
-contract with the Town Board of the City of Welling-
ton, or with any Road Board, or person or persons
having the control of any of the streets within the
limits hereinafter mentioned, for lighting the same,
or any of them with gas, and for providing such Town
Board, Road Board, or person or persons with lamps,
lamp posts, burners, and pipes, for such purpose, and
for the repairs thereof, in such manner and upon such
terms as shall be agreed upon between the Com-
pany and the said Town Board, Road Board, or person
or persons.
That it shall be lawful for the Company to let for
hire, any meter, for ascertaining the quantity of gas
consumed or supplied, and any fittings for the gas,
for such remuneration in money as shall be agreed
upon between the Company and any person to whom
the same may be so let. Such remuneration shall
be recoverable in the same manner as the rents or
sums due to the Company for gas; and such meters
and fittings shall not be subject to distress for rent
of the premises where the same may be used, nor to
be taken in execution under any process or proceeding
of a Court of Law or Equity, or in Bankruptcy,
against the person in whose possession the same
may be.
That it shall be lawful for the Engineer, Clerk, or
other Officer duly appointed for that purpose by the
Company, with any police constable for the time
being on duty, whom he may require to accompany
him, at all reasonable times, to enter any buildings
or place lighted with gas supplied by the Company,
and to inspect the meters, fittings, and works, for
regulating the supply of gas, and to ascertain the
quantity of gas consumed or supplied. If any person
shall hinder such Engineer, Clerk, or other Officer
duly appointed as aforesaid, from entering and
making such inspection as aforesaid at any reasona-
ble
time, he shall, for every such offence, forfeit to the
Company a sum not exceeding five pounds.
That it shall be lawful for the Company to stop the
gas from entering the premises of any person supplied
by the Company with gas, who shall have neglected
to pay the rent due for the same, either by cutting
off the service pipe, or by such means as the Company
shall think fit; and to recover the rent from such
person, together with the expense of cutting off the
gas, and the cost of recovering the rent, by action in
any Court of Law of competent jurisdiction.
That in all cases in which the Company are author-
ized to cut off and take away the supply of gas from
any house, building, or premises, under the provisions
of this Act, it shall be lawful for the Company, their
agents, or workmen, after giving forty-eight hours'
previous notice in writing to the occupier, or (if there
be no occupier) after leaving such notice on any
portion of the premises, to enter into such house,
building, or premises, between the hours of nine
o'clock in the forenoon, and four o'clock in the after-
noon, with any police constable for the time being on
duty, whom he may require to accompany them, and
to remove and carry away any pipe, meter, fittings,
or other works, the property of the Company.
That it shall be lawful for the Company from time
to time to make bye-laws or regulations; provided
that the same shall not be repugnant to this Act, or
to any Act of the General Assembly, or to any bye-
law or regulation which may be made thereunder,
and may impose any penalty not exceeding the sum of
five pounds, to be recovered in a summary way for the
breach of any bye-law or regulation of the Company.
That it shall be lawful for the Company to exercise
all or any of the powers hereby granted within the
limits of the City of Wellington, in the Province of
Wellington.

SUBSCRIPTIONS.-The subscription is at the rate of Β£2
per annum, or 10s. 6d. per quarter, payable in advance.
An extra subscription of 10s. to the Gazette will entitle each
yearly subscriber to the Acts of the General Assembly as pub-
lished during the year.
Subscriptions are required to terminate with the quarters
ending March, June, September, or December. A less period
than three months cannot be subscribed for.
Single copies of the Gazette will be 1s. each.
ADVERTISEMENTS will be charged for according to the
following scale :-

All advertisements should be written on one side of the paper,
and signatures, &c., should be written in a legible hand.
The number of insertions required must be written across
the face of the advertisement.
All applications for subscription or for the insertion of private
advertisements in the New Zealand Gazette, except from places
where agents have been appointed for that purpose, should be
addressed to the Government Printer, Wellington, and at the
same time, pre-payment (by money order when necessary) at
the above rates must be made to him.
Postage duty stamps cannot in any case be received in
payment from any place at which post office orders are issued,
and under any circumstances are subject to a deduction at the
rate of one shilling in the pound.
Agents are appointed to receive advertisements for the New
Zealand Gazette at the following places :--
