General Meeting of the Shareholders of "The
Taranaki Petroleum Company, Limited," held on the
21st March, and adjourned to the 28th of the same
month, it was resolved "That the affairs of the Com-

PATENTS ACT, 1860.-Notice is hereby given,
that application has been made to His Excel-
lency the Governor, by and on behalf of John Avery,
of Nelson, in the Province of Nelson, Flax-dresser,
for the grant to him of Letters Patent pursuant to
the provisions of "The Patents Act, 1860," for the
exclusive use, within the Colony of New Zealand, of
an Invention of an Apparatus for the Prevention of
Fire from Spontaneous Combustion taking place in
ships, stores, warehouses and other buildings stowed
or stored with Wool, Flax, or other Fibre.
Any person desirous of entering an objection to
such grant is required to send, within four months
of the publication hereof, to the office of John Boyle
Bennett, Esquire, the officer appointed to receive the
same, a statement in writing, setting forth clearly the
grounds of such objection, subscribed with his proper
name and address.

IN the matter of a Bill intituled "An Act to enable
the Superintendent of the Province of Canterbury
to construct a Railway between the Addington
Station, on the Great Southern Railway, and the
junction of the road forming the north-eastern and
the south-eastern boundaries of section 1028, near
the north-western boundary of the Native Reserve in
the Mandeville District, in the said Province.
Notice is hereby given, that application is intended
to be made, at the next Session of the General
Assembly of New Zealand, for leave to bring in a
Bill to authorize the Superintendent of Canterbury,
to construct a Railway between Addington Station,
on the Great Southern Railway, and the junction of
the road forming the north-eastern and the south-
eastern boundaries of section 1028, near the north-
western boundary of the Native Reserve, in the
Mandeville District in the said Province.
Copies of the Bill will be deposited in the Private
Bill Office, on or before the commencement of the
Session.
A plan, together with a book of reference thereto
and sections, will be deposited for public inspection
at the Office of the Commissioner of Crown Lands, at
the Government Buildings, Christchurch, on or before
the first day of May next, or so soon after as may be
convenient.
Copies also of the Bill and plans will be deposited
at the Resident Magistrate's Court in Christchurch,
and Kaiapoi, on or before the first day of May next,
and at the Resident Magistrate's Court, Rangiora.
It is intended to apply for the following powers:-
To construct the Railway along the line laid out on
the plans.
To cross roads by level crossings when necessary,
and to divert and stop up any roads that may require
so diverting or stopping up.
To construct such Bridges over the Waimakariri at
the places shown on the plans as may be deemed
necessary.
For power to enter upon all lands required for
the purposes of the Railway, for the purposes of
making surveys, and for taking and holding the lands
required for the purposes of the Railway along the
line laid out in the plans.
For powers to be exercised under "The Lands
Clauses Consolidation Act, 1863, Amendment Act,
1866," for the compulsory taking of lands, and for
settling compensation for such lands.
For powers to lease the line of Railway.
For powers to levy tolls and other charges.
For powers to make bye-laws.
For powers to enable the Superintendent to con-
tract with any person or persons to make such
Railway, or any portion thereof as may be required.
For general powers under an Act of the Imperial
Parliament, called "The Railway Clauses Consolida-
tion Act, 1845," excepting the following clauses, i.e.,
Nos. 7 to 15, both inclusive, 17, 25 to 29, both
inclusive, 39, 46 to 51, both inclusive, 54, 57, 59, 60,
63 to 67, both inclusive, 76, 91, 92, 107, 109, 110,
111, 114, 140, 141, 150, 159, 161, 162, and 163.
