NOTES.

Mongonui. The weather has been pleasant, although the rainfall was far above the average; heavy falls on 1st, 22nd, 27th, and
28th. Thunder on 21st and 27th; prevailing wind from N.E. and S.W.; winds generally moderate.

Auckland. The weather was generally very pleasant at this station. Heavy rain on 1st from S.E., and thunder on 18th and 19th,
with rain; at times it was very sultry and oppressive; prevailing wind from S.W.

Taranaki. On 4th stormy from W., and on 30th strong wind from same quarter, and no rain; thunder on 18th; foggy on 27th
and 28th, otherwise the weather on the whole was fine and pleasant.

Napier. Very heavy rain on 1st, 2nd, 19th and 23rd, otherwise the weather was tolerably fine, though close and sultry; stormy
on 29th from W.; fourteen days of N.E. wind. Slight shocks of earthquake at 3 a.m. on 8th, and on 15th at 2 a.m.;
also a slight shock on 17th.

Wellington. On 1st heavy rain and wind from S.W.; very stormy from S.W. on 15th, with only slight rain,-foggy; on 18th dull
and foggy, heavy rain-wind S.W. and S.E.; very stormy from N.W. on 28th, with rain. Otherwise weather during month
was fine and clear; strong wind frequently from N.W., but bright and pleasant; twenty-five days N.W. wind. Aurora
Australis on 3rd at 9 p.m.

Nelson. Very fine weather generally at this station; very low rainfall, and moderate winds. On 5th squally weather from S.W.,
with heavy rain; and on 28th and 29th strong wind from N.E. and N.W., but no rain; prevailing wind S.W.

Christchurch. The weather was generally wet during month, but it was occasionally very fine and pleasant, though dull. On
16th there was hail from S.W., and on 29th a most severe hail storm occurred from same quarter, also thunder and
lightning. Prevailing wind S.W.

Bealey. Wet disagreeable weather prevailed, with light N.W. winds. On 9th there was a N.W. gale, with heavy rain; also on
24th and 25th stormy from same quarter, but no rain; on 28th a thunder storm occurred, with very heavy rain-3.750
inches recorded up to morning of 29th; slight earthquake on 10th at 9:40 a.m. Twenty-six days of N.W. wind.

Hokitika. Very wet on night of 9th, with strong N.W. wind; stormy on 15th from S.W., with rain; also strong wind
from same quarter on 17th and 21st; a gale on night of 28th from S.W., with heavy rain and squalls; foggy on 14th, 15th,
21st, and 26th. Prevailing winds from S.W. and N.W.

Dunedin.-Storm from S.E. on 3rd, with heavy rain. Rainfall far above the average; heavy falls recorded on 2nd, 3rd, and 29th,
when considerably over the inch fell in each case. There was, however, some pleasant weather during the month, though
dull. Prevailing wind from W.

Southland. Rainfall greatest recorded for eleven years in any one month, although number of rainy days was not excessive.
Four heavy falls occurred-2.61 (4th), 3.02 (14th), 2.12 (29th), 1.09 (31st), -the three first from S.E., and last from N.W.
Strong winds on 24th and 26th from N. and N.W., without rain; thunder on 31st. In the intervals between the floods, the
weather was fine generally. Prevailing wind S.E.

GENERAL REMARKS.

Month marked by excessive rainfall in the North and South of the Islands, and continued dry westerly winds about the
central portion, especially on the West Coast.
