GASPAR STRAIT.

THE following particulars of a rock in Gaspar Strait,
furnished by Captain Quayle, master of the "Francis
Henty," are published for general information.

EDWARD COHEN,
Commissioner of Trade and Customs.
Department of Trade and Customs,
Melbourne, 7th February, 1870.

In the middle of last October, at 2 a.m., the ship
"Pare Joie," from Hong Kong to Buenos Ayres,
whilst standing to the eastward on the starboard tack,
with the wind from the southward, struck on a rock
at the entrance of Gaspar Strait, and remained there
for twenty-four hours. The Peak of Gaspar Island
bore South half East, distant five (5) miles. This
rock is marked " doubtful" on the Admiralty Charts,
and in a position four and a half (4Β½) miles to the
westward of where the "Pare Joie" struck.

The Admiralty Sailing Directions for the China
Seas mention that it is doubtful whether such a rock
exists.

(Signed) W. T. QUAYLE,
Master, barque "Francis Henty."
