Candidates shall not be permitted to matriculate who
shall not have passed in six at least of these subjects.
2. The successful Candidates shall be arranged in
two classes, the first class comprising those who have
passed with credit, the second those who have simply
passed. In each class the names shall be arranged
alphabetically and not in order of merit. Candidates
who shall have passed well in four out of not less
than six subjects shall be placed in the class of
"Passed with Credit."
3. Matriculation Examinations may be held at such
times, in such places, and under such supervision as
the Council on the recommendation of the Professorial
Board may from time to time appoint.
4. Candidates who at any Matriculation Examina-
tion have passed in any number of subjects less than
six shall be entitled to receive a certificate thereof,
in the form contained in the Schedule hereto.
SCHEDULE.
Form of Certificate.
Whereas by the Regulations of the University, no
person is entitled to Matriculate therein unless he
has, at one and the same examination, passed in six
at least of the subjects prescribed for the Matricula-
tion Examination; and whereas Candidates who at
any Matriculation Examination have passed in any
number of subjects less than six are entitled to receive
a certificate thereof; and whereas the Candidate
hereinafter named has passed in certain of the said
subjects, although not in a sufficient number for
Matriculation: now these are to certify that at a
Matriculation Examination of this University, held
during the term of 18 passed

Arithmetic.
Explanation of the common system of numerical
notation.
The nature of vulgar and decimal fractions; com-
prising the rules of their addition, subtraction,
multiplication, division, and reduction; with the
reasons for these rules.
The rule of proportion.
The extraction of the square roots of whole num-
bers and of decimals.
Euclid.
The first two books, including the definitions and
the axioms, according to the text of Dr. Simson.
Algebra.
Explanation of the meaning of Algebraical symbols,
and of the method of using them, especially the
bracket.
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
of Algebraical expressions of an integral and of a
fractional form.
Explanation of the meaning of an index, with the
proof of the equation $a^m.a^n=a^{m-n}$.
Reduction of expressions to their simplest forms.
The solution of simple equations.
In the preceding cases the student is required,
when called on, to give the demonstration and ex-
planation of the rule employed, and its application
to particular examples.
History.
Any two of the following periods,
together with the Geography
illustrative of them :-
Greece-To the death of Alexander.
Text Book: Dr. William Smith's
History.
Rome-To the Social War. Text
Book: Dr. Liddell's History.
England-To the Battle of Water-
loo. Text Book: The Student's
Hume.
In subsequent examinations-Any two of Dr.
William Smith's Smaller Histories of Greece, Rome,
and England.
Geography-Comprising:-
(1.) Physical Geography-The following plates of
Keith Johnston's Physical Atlas, with the letter-
press belonging to each: viz. (1) The Mountains,
Table Lands, Plains and Valleys of Europe; (2) of
Asia; (3) of Africa; (4) of North America; (5) of
South America; (6) Chart of the Ocean Currents of
the World; (7) of the River Systems of the World;
(8) Distribution over the Globe of Earthquakes and
Volcanoes; (9) of Vegetable Life; (10) of Animal
Life.
(2.) General and Political Geography-So much
information as is contained in Spence's Civil Service
Geography.
(3.) Filling in of Outline Maps-(a.) On an Out-
line Map of any one of the Continents, to fill in and
