tary, and to ascertain whether the claimants making
the same have done any of the things described in the
fifth section of "The New Zealand Settlements Act,
1863," and further to make inquiry into the character
of certain purchases and gifts of land within the said
boundaries alleged to have been made by and to
Europeans; and do appoint you a Commission for
the purposes of the said deed, and do enjoin you to
make such adjudications, awards, and reports, in all
the matters hereby referred to you, as may consist
with the equity of the cases respectively; and do
authorize and empower you to order the attendance
of such persons, and the production of such books,
papers, maps, and other things, as may be needful
for the due prosecution of such inquiry, and to
administer oaths and take declarations to and from
all or any of the persons so summoned; and do
enjoin you to report to me from time to time without
delay the decisions and awards which you shall make
under the powers hereof.

WHEREAS by deed bearing date the eighteenth
day of December, one thousand eight hundred
and sixty-eight, the loyal portions of the tribes of
Aitangamahaki and Rongowhakaata, and of the hapu
of Ngaitahupo, did, for good and sufficient con-
siderations in the said deed expressed, cede certain
lands therein specified to His Excellency Sir George
Ferguson Bowen, on behalf of the Crown:
Now therefore I, the said Sir George Ferguson
Bowen, G.C.M.G., Governor of New Zealand, do
hereby declare that I have accepted the cession of
the said lands, as the same are described on the said
deed and in the Schedule hereto, and do notify that,
from and after the said eighteenth day of December,
one thousand eight hundred and sixty-eight, the
Native title to and over the said land was extinguished.

SCHEDULE.
All the land bounded by a line commencing at Paritu
on the sea coast (to the northwards of the Mahia
peninsula), thence running straight to the Reinga,
thence along the Ruaki-turi River to its source in
the watershed range dividing the East Coast from
the Bay of Plenty; thence along the summit of the
said range, that is to say, by Maungapohatu and
Maungahaumi, to Tutamoe; thence in the direction of
the sea by Pukahikatoa, Arakihi, Wakaroa, and
Rakuraku to the sea, at Turanganui; thence along
the sea coast to the commencing point at Paritu.

Kawaroa, and ceded to the Crown by Te Rei
Paehua and others; on the South by Crown Lands;
on the West by the Manawatu River, and by other
portions of the land granted as aforesaid to the
children of Thomas Uppadine Cook, excepting the
piece of land awarded to Parakaia te Pouepa, con-
taining eighty acres.

WHEREAS by "The Volunteer Act, 1865," it is
enacted that the Governor may at any time
call out for actual service any Volunteer Corps, and
that every officer and volunteer belonging to any
corps so called out shall be bound to assemble at
such place as the Governor may direct, and shall
remain on actual service until released by the
Governor's authority:
Now therefore I, Sir George Ferguson Bowen,
the Governor of New Zealand, do hereby call out for
actual service the Volunteer Corps named in the
Schedule hereto; and I do hereby direct the Officers
and Volunteers of the said Corps to assemble at the
time and place mentioned in the Schedule aforesaid.
