NOTES.
Mongonui.—Heavy squalls of wind on the 9th from S.W.; on 12th, severe gale from the N.E., with only slight rain; thunder
on the 1st and 21st. Although the total rainfall is considerably below the average, yet the number of days of rain is higher
than usual (22 days). Altogether, the weather was damp and unpleasant during the month.
Auckland.—Stormy on 1st and 2nd from S. and S.W., with hail and rain; strong S.W. wind on night of 8th, with rain; on the
whole the weather was dull, cold, and unpleasant during the month.
Taranaki.—Thunder-storm on 2nd, and rain; N.W. gale on 17th; very severe storm on 22nd and 23rd, commencing from S.E.
and changing to S.W., no rain; smart shock of earthquake on 16th, at 7.20 p.m., from S.W. On the whole, fine weather
during the month with little rain, but stormy.
Wellington.—Wet stormy weather on 1st from S.E.; fine bright frosty weather until the night of 7th, when wind changed from
N.W. to S.E. and brought heavy rain and strong wind, also sleet, rain, and hail. Fine bright pleasant weather up to the 20th,
except on the 17th, when there was heavy rain, and strong N.W. winds on 15th and 16th; from the 21st to the 24th the
weather was wet, squally, and unpleasant, with hail and snow on 23rd; for the remainder of the month the weather was
bright and agreeable, fine clear nights. There were dense fogs on the mornings of 4th, 10th, and 11th, also on 13th, which
soon cleared off the prevailing wind from S.E.
Nelson.—Fine clear weather at this station throughout the month; slight rainfall and winds moderate.
Christchurch.—Stormy and wet weather from S.W. on 1st and 2nd, with hail; slight snow on 8th; about three-quarter inch of
snow on ground on 24th; smart shock of earthquake on 23rd at 10 a.m.; the weather was generally fine during the month,
prevailing wind S.W.
Hokitika.—The weather was unusually fine at this station throughout the month; the rainfall is considerably less than for same
month in previous years; there was thunder on the 7th, with rain. There were some sharp frosts at nights.
Bealey.—At this station, also, the weather was on the whole fine; there were five days of snow; hail on 17th and fog on 23rd;
heavy rain on 8th—very light winds.
Dunedin.—The weather was generally fine at this station; there were no heavy falls of rain, and the winds were moderate—the
prevailing wind was from W.
Southland.—On the whole fine weather, for although rain fell on eighteen days, the amount in most cases was very small; no
snow, gales, fogs, or very sharp frosts occurred, and the temperature was remarkably mild; hail, however, fell on three days
of the month.
GENERAL REMARKS.
The weather throughout the Colony for this month was much finer than is usually the case at this season of the year, but
particularly so in the South Island; the rainfall was in almost every case far below the average, and with the exception of a few
stormy days in the North, the winds were moderate.
