No. 18 of 1869.
Marine Department,
Wellington, 21st July, 1869.

THE following Notice to Mariners, with regard
to recent changes in the Channel across the Outer
Bar of Otago Harbour, which has been received from
the Harbour Master, is published for general infor-
mation.

The channel is showing a strong tendency to return
to its usual and more permanent position, but any
further changes will be duly advertised.

JAMES M. BALFOUR,
Colonial Marine Engineer.

NOTICE TO MARINERS.
Otago Harbour.

OWING to the continued, and recently sudden,
changes of the channel across the outer bar, it has
been considered necessary, in the meantime, to dis-
continue the use of the leading marks for the same;
and Mariners are hereby informed that the red beacon
on the Sandspit has been taken down, and Masters
of vessels are cautioned, when crossing the bar without
having a pilot on board, to follow carefully the direc-
tions given by the semaphore at the flagstaff on
Taiaroa Head.

WM. THOMSON,
Harbour Office, Port Chalmers,
25th June, 1869.
Harbour Master.

No. 20 of 1869.
ALTERATION OF CHANNEL, SOUTH ENTRANCE,
MORETON BAY.

THE following Notices to Mariners with regard to
an important alteration in the Channel, South
Entrance, Moreton Bay, are published for general
information.

JAMES M. BALFOUR,
Colonial Marine Engineer.

NOTICE TO MARINERS.
South Entrance, Moreton Bay.

In consequence of the growth, southwards, of the
North Spit, vessels, after crossing the Bar, should
open the beacons to the southward sufficiently to
clear the broken or discoloured water extending off
that Spit; and when abreast of the Break, should
haul up to get the beacons again in line, being care-
ful not to open them to the southward again until
the vessel is past the South Break.

G. P. HEATH, Lieut. R.N.,
Portmaster.

Department of Ports and Harbours,
Brisbane, 14th June, 1869.

NOTICE TO MARINERS.
South Entrance, Moreton Bay.

In consequence of the growth, southwards, of the
North Spit, and the opening out of what is, at pre-
sent, a shoal channel through the North Bank, the
action of the tidal streams has been so far altered as
to have caused the Bar to shoal to a depth of thirteen
feet at low water.

Masters of vessels must therefore exercise in-
creased caution in taking this passage, when there is
any swell on the coast.

The directions to be followed at present are those
published on the 14th ultimo, care being taken not
to cross the Bar to the southward of the line of
beacons.

G. P. HEATH, Lieut. R.N.,
Portmaster.

Department of Ports and Harbours,
2nd July, 1869.
