NOTES.

Mongonui. On the 3rd, very strong wind from N.W.; thunder and lightning occurred on 4th, 17th, 25th, 28th, and 29th; rain,
and degree of moisture rather high.

Auckland. On 3rd, violent gale from N.W., with rain; stormy on 20th, from S.W.; stormy on 28th, with thunder and rain,
from N.; a good deal of wet and stormy weather.

Taranaki. Very severe thunder-storms at this Station from 14th to 17th, and also on 26th, 28th, and 31st, with strong wind
especially on 20th from N.W., and on 30th and 31st from S.E., with heavy rain; on the 14th, the lightning was very severe,
and caused considerable damage; on 31st, during the thunder-storm, half an inch of rain fell in less than a quarter of an
hour; three slight earthquakes on 10th.

Napier. Gale from N.E. on the 3rd, with rain; on the 29th, gale from S.E., with thunder, lightning, and rain; thunder and
lightning on 28th and 29th; thirteen days of N.E. winds.

Wellington. High wind on 7th, N.W.; also stormy and wet on 29th; 1.820 inch of rain on 30th, with S.E. wind; from the
11th to the 19th the weather was unusually warm and oppressive; slight earthquake on 9th; seventeen days of N.W. wind.

Nelson. Stormy on 1st from N.E., and on 20th from S.W.; very loud thunder on the 14th, 15th, and 17th; very slight rainfall.

Christchurch. Windy weather on 2nd and 3rd from N.E., with rain; strong E. wind on 16th and 17th; on 20th, stormy, from
N.W.; stormy weather on the whole, chiefly from E.; slight rainfall.

Hokitika. Very fine pleasant weather at this Station during the month; light winds, principally from N.W., and small rainfall;
thunder on 26th, and also on the 31st, with lightning.

Dunedin. Gale from N.E., with rain, on 2nd; very heavy rain on 27th (1.690 inch); solar halo observed on afternoon of 23rd;
fine weather.

Southland. The weather was on the whole fine at this Station. The Observer remarks that a gale occurred on the 3rd and 4th,
blowing first from E. and then from N.W., the barometer fell until the storm abated, when it stood at 28.96, then rose;
on the 19th, the barometer fell to 28.97, and a heavy gale (W.N.W.) was experienced on the 20th; heavy rain on 27th, 1.01
inch fell in twenty-four hours; thunder-storm on 26th; two smart shocks of earthquake felt on the 14th.

GENERAL REMARKS.

Several heavy thunder-storms have been experienced throughout the Colony during this month, but they have been especially
severe at Taranaki and some of the other Stations in the North Island. The rainfall on the whole has been considerably lower
than usual.
