to constitute a Board of Medical Officers for the
purpose of carrying out the provisions of the said
recited Act.

one thousand eight hundred and sixty-

Council, and reserved by the Superintendent of
the Province of Southland for the signification of the
Governor's pleasure thereon, intituled

"The Appropriation Ordinance, No. 1, 1869,"

having been laid before the Governor, His Excellency
has been pleased to assent to the same.

the election of Members of the Provincial Council of

No. 5, of 19th January, 1867.

This appointment to take effect on and from the
first day of April next.

lished in conformity with the provisions of
"The Execution of Criminals Act, 1858."

CERTIFICATE.

I, ALEXANDER JOHNSTON, the Medical Officer in
attendance at the execution of Whakamau, at the
Gaol of Wellington, do hereby certify and declare
that I have this day witnessed the execution of the
said Whakamau at the said gaol: And I do further
certify and declare, that the said Whakamau was, in
pursuance of the sentence of the Supreme Court,
hanged by the neck until his body was dead.

Given under my hand this twenty-third day
of March, in the year one thousand eight
hundred and sixty-nine, at the Gaol of
Wellington.

DECLARATION.

WE do hereby testify and declare that we have this
day been present when the extreme penalty of the
law was carried into execution on the body of
Whakamau, convicted at the Criminal Session of
the Supreme Court, held at Wellington on the fifth
day of March instant, and sentenced to death; and
that the said Whakamau was, in pursuance of the
said sentence, hanged by the neck until his body
was dead.

Dated this twenty-third day of March, in the
year one thousand eight hundred and
sixty-nine, at the Gaol of Wellington.

THE following section of "The Registration Act,
1858," is reprinted here for the information of
Coroners, Constables, and others:β€”

"XIII. In case any new-born child or any dead
body shall be found exposed, a Constable of the
district shall forthwith inform the Registrar [of
Births, Deaths, and Marriages] thereof, and of the
place where such child or dead body was found; and
where an inquest shall be held on any dead body,
the Coroner or Justice of the Peace holding the
same shall notify to the Registrar of the district the
verdict of jury, with all other particulars re-
quired to be registered concerning the death, and
such Registrar shall make the entry in his Register
Book accordingly, and the same shall be signed by
the Coroner or Justice of the Peace by whom the
information has been given."
