The humble Petition of the undersigned persons
being not less than fifty of the inhabitant
householders resident within the Town of
Hokitika, being one of the towns or places
mentioned in the first Schedule to "The
Municipal Corporations Act, 1867,"

SHEWETHβ€”

  1. Your Petitioners consider it to be necessary for
    the due government and improvement of the said
    Town of Hokitika, that the same should be brought
    under the operation of the said "Municipal Corpora-
    tions Act, 1867," and that the said Town of Hokitika
    should be constituted a Borough under the said Act.

  2. That the boundaries of the said Town of
    Hokitika are as follows, and are specified in the
    proclamation by His Honor the Superintendent of
    the Province of Canterbury, of the 30th June, 1866,
    as follows:-All that piece or parcel of land con-
    taining 640 acres more or less, situate on the
    Hokitika River, commencing at a point on the high
    bank of the old bed of the aforesaid river, the said
    point being forty chains forty links West of Trigno-
    metrical Station 31; thence following a line bearing
    North 20 degrees 14 minutes East (magnetic), a
    distance of sixty-two chains sixty-five links; thence
    westerly at a right angle, a distance of eighty-five
    chains forty links to the sea beach, following the said
    beach southerly to the mouth of the Hokitika River;
    and from thence returning along the northern bank
    thereof, and the high bank of the old river bed above
    mentioned to the commencing point. And also all
    that parcel of land containing 640 acres more or less,
    situate on the Hokitika River, West Coast, bounded
    on the northward by Reserve 271 in red; on the
    westward by the sea; on the East by Section
    number 8238, and a line in continuation of the
    western boundary thereof; and on the southward
    by a line at right angles to the last described
    boundary, and about one hundred and thirty chains
    distant on the average from the reserve above
    mentioned.

  3. The title of the Act under which the said Town
    of Hokitika has been, or is reputed to have been
    incorporated, is "The Hokitika Municipal Council
    Ordinance, 1867," and which said Act was made and
    passed by the Superintendent and Provincial Council
    of the Province of Canterbury.

Your Petitioners therefore pray that your Excel-
lency will be pleased to constitute the said Town of
Hokitika a Borough under the provisions of the said
"Municipal Corporations Act, 1867," and to declare
by proclamation in the Government Gazette that all
the several parts of the said Act shall extend and be
applied to the said Town of Hokitika, from and after
a certain time to be named by your Excellency in
such proclamation.

And your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever
pray, &c.

Westland, New Zealand, rate collector, do solemnly
and sincerely declare that all the signatures affixed
to the above Petition are the genuine signatures of
the persons whose they purport to be, and that such
persons are inhabitant householders of the district
therein referred to.

SIR,β€”A Petition, praying your Excellency to
constitute the Town of Hokitika, in the County
of Westland, a Borough under "The Municipal
Corporations Act, 1867," having been transmitted
to me by the Hon. Colonial Secretary, in pursuance
of the provisions of the twenty-second section of the
said Act, I have the honor to signify to your Excel-
lency that I do not dissent to the prayer of that
Petition.
