a northerly course might have been taken with
safety.

In conclusion, it is but just to observe that the
master had made about sixty voyages on that coast,
and had never before met with any accident; and
that all on board do readily attest to his utmost per-
sonal attention during the whole of the night upon
which he sustained the loss of his ship.
I have, &c.,
JAMES. C. CRAWFORD, R.M.
The Hon. the Postmaster-General.

I, Robert Johnson, Nautical Assessor, on the
Inquiry into the cause of the wreck of the steamer
"Star of the Evening" concur in the above Report
concerning the said loss of the said vessel.

ENTRANCE TO PORT PHILIP, VICTORIA.β€”
The following Notice to Mariners, respecting
Point Lonsdale Light, extracted from the Victoria
Government Gazette, of 19th February, 1867, is pub-
lished for general information.
JAMES M. BALFOUR,
Marine Engineer.
Marine Department, Wellington,
18th March, 1867.

NOTICE TO MARINERS.
Point Lonsdale Light.
Commanders of vessels, pilots, and others naviga-
ting the entrance to Port Philip, are hereby informed
that the temporary fixed Red and Green Light, on
Point Lonsdale, will, on and after the 25th instant,
be discontinued, and a light of the same character,
but of more power and range, will be exhibited from
sunset to sunrise from the Lighthouse near the Point
Lonsdale Telegraph Station.
This light will be seen ten (10) miles off in
ordinary weather, appearing Green between the
bearings of about N. by W. and N.W. W.; and
Red between the bearings of about N.W. W. and
W. by S.
From these bearings navigators will observe that
the N.W. W. line passes near the Lonsdale and
Lightning Rocks; they must therefore be on their
guard before the colors begin to change, as the
blending of the Red and Green lights will indicate
close vicinity to the line which passes from the
lighthouse over these dangers.
