J. C. RICHMOND.

Lord Clarence Paget to the Under Secretary of State
for the Colonies.

Admiralty, 25th January, 1865.

SIR,—I am commanded by my Lords Commis-
sioners of the Admiralty to acquaint you, for the
information of the Secretary of State for the Colonies,
that in consequence of the great inconvenience that
has been found to arise from the fact that many of
the Naval Cadets who are natives of the Colonies,
after joining the Training Ship in England, have no
friends with whom to spend the vacations, my Lords
have laid down the following regulations, which they
request may be communicated to the parents or
friends of all boys nominated to a Cadetship upon
the recommendation of the Secretary of State :--

"In the case of a Candidate for a Naval Cadetship
who is a native of one of the Colonies, he will be
examined in the first instance on board the ship of
the Senior Officer on the Station, and will then be
required to join the Training Ship in England, as in
the case of other Cadets. It is however to be fully
understood, that arrangements must be made for his
lodging and maintenance during the vacations (six
weeks at Midsummer and five weeks at Christmas),
during which periods he will not be permitted to
remain on board the Training Ship."

I am, &c.,
C. PAGET.

The Under Secretary of State
for the Colonies.
