smoke could be seen at the native encampment, also
no new tracks; in all probability, therefore, the
natives have left that part of the river.
The object of the expedition of the 13th was a
twofold one—the first to put as many natives as
possible hors de combat, and the second and most im-
portant one, to prove to the natives that we can find
them wherever they may hide and that their securest
fastnesses will prove no obstacle to their being
attacked.
