Steamship Trial Report

82

THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.

the 1st instant, I attended the trial trip of
the steamship 'Otago,' and have the honor
to forward the enclosed report for the infor-
mation of the Colonial Government.

I have, &c.,
JOHN RATER,
Second Assistant Engineer.
Lieutenant D. Yonge,
H. M. S. 'Curaçoa.'

REPORT OF TRIAL OF THE S. S. 'OTAGO.'

Kind of Engine ... Inverted direct acting
Diameter of Cylinders ... 45 inches
Length of Stroke ... 2ft. 6in.
Pitch of Screw ... 23 feet
Quantity of Coals can stow ... 250 tons
Average consumption per hour... 1 ton
No. of days can steam, full speed ... 10

Distance. Time. Revolutions of Engines. Steam. BAROMETER. Speed.
min. sec. Fore Engine. After Engine. Average speed of three runs
1 mile 6 20 62 18lbs. 25 in. 22 in.
2 miles 10 50 63 19lbs. 25 in. 22.5 in.
1 mile 5 15 64 20lbs. 25 in. 23 in.

Average of two last
runs

The first mile was made under adverse
circumstances, owing to the proximity of the
first measured distance, so that the steam
had scarcely recovered its average density,
which had been lessened by condensation on
starting.

This will account for the better result
shown after—the last mile being made against
a strong breeze on the port bow.

The engines worked very smoothly and
satisfactorily.

JOHN RATER,
Second Assistant Engineer,
H. M. S. 'Curaçoa."
