THE following Notice, respecting the exten-
sion of the time for sending in Tenders
for Leasing Government Railways in New
South Wales, is published for general inform-
ation.

Sydney, 9th December, 1862.

LEASING GOVERNMENT RAILWAYS.

Referring to the Notice from this Depart-
ment, dated the 9th May last, inviting Tenders
for leasing the Government Railways, from
the 1st January next: Notice is now hereby
given, that as the extensions at present in
progress cannot be opened for traffic within
the anticipated time, the Government will not
be prepared to hand over the Railways before
the 1st July next, and the time for receiving
Tenders is consequently extended until the 1st
May, 1863.

Those parties who have, in pursuance of the
Notice dated the 9th May last, already sub-
mitted Tenders, are informed that the same
will remain in this Office, unopened, until the
extended time for the receipt of Tenders
expires, up to which date they will be at
liberty to send in amended Tenders or to with-
draw those sent in.

Further particulars may be obtained at the
Office of Public Works, Phillip Street, Syd-
ney.

Signals at the Hokianga River is
published for general information.

NOTICE TO MARINERS.

HOKIANGA RIVER.

Superintendent's Office,
Auckland, 26th January, 1863.

MASTERS of Vessels and others naviga-
ting the Hokianga River are hereby
informed that, on and after the 1st day of
March proximo, the following will be the Code
of Signals for taking Hokianga Bar and
entering the River:-

  1. SIGNALS. From the Signal-staff on the
    South Head the following Signals will be
    made:-

No. 1. Blue Peter-Keep to Sea; Bar is
not fit to take.
No. 2. Red Flag-Take the Bar; there
is no danger.
No. 3. Blue with White Cross-Ebb
Tide; Bar not fit.
No. 4. White-First Quarter Flood.

-When these flags are understood, they should
be answered from the ship by a pendant or flag
where best seen. The Pilot will be at the
entrance of the Heads in his boat, but seldom
outside the Bar.

  1. If a vessel is too far to the North for
    entering, a White Square will be hoisted on
    the South yard-arm; and if too far to the
    South, it will be hoisted on the North yard-
    arm. Vessels to be particularly guided by the
    hoisting of the White Square at the yard-arms,
    and that direction. No vessel should take the
    Bar until the Flagstaff bears E 3 N.
