A PROCLAMATION,
Increasing the Rates of Postage on Letters
to certain places beyond Seas.
By His Excellency Sir GEORGE
GREY, Knight, Commander of
the Most Honorable Order of
the Bath, Administrator of
the Government of the Colony
of New Zealand and its
Dependencies, &c., &c., &c.
WHEREAS by the "Post Office Act,
1858," it is enacted that it shall be
lawful for the Governor from time to time,
by Proclamation to be published in the New
Zealand Gazette, to fix, alter, and abolish
the Rates of Postage at any time payable
within the Colony for the transmission of
Letters and Newspapers by Post, either
between places within New Zealand, or to or
from places beyond Seas, and at what time
the same shall be paid, and that the Postage
so made payable shall be charged and paid
accordingly:
And whereas by a Proclamation, dated the
twenty-ninth day of December, One thousand
eight hundred and sixty, made in pursuance
of the said recited power, certain Rates of
Postage have been fixed for the transmission
of letters in manner as aforesaid: And it is
expedient that the Rates so fixed for the
conveyance of letters to certain Colonies and
Foreign Countries hereinafter specified should
be increased:
Now, therefore, I, the Administrator of
the Government of New Zealand, in further
pursuance of the said recited power and
authority, with the advice and consent of the
Executive Council of the said Colony, do
hereby proclaim and declare, that from and
after the day of the date hereof, the following
Rates shall be payable in respect of all letters
posted within New Zealand for transmission
to the several Colonies and Foreign Countries
hereinafter mentioned, that is to say, Hong-
Kong, Penang, Singapore, any part of the
Empire of China, the Empire of Japan, the
Phillippine Islands, and the Islands of Java,
Sumatra, Borneo, Labuan, and the Moluccas,
and the Kingdom of Siam:β
For every Letter not exceeding half an
ounce in weight, One shilling.
For every Letter exceeding half an ounce,
and not exceeding one ounce, Two shillings.
And so on increasing two shillings for
every additional ounce or fraction of an
ounce.

land, and issued under the
Seal of the Colony of New
Zealand, this fourteenth day
of October, in the year of
our Lord One thousand eight
hundred and sixty-one.
