Agricultural and Industrial Products will be
held at London in the year One thousand
eight hundred and sixty-two, And whereas a
Commission was issued under my hand and
seal, bearing date the fourth day of August
instant, appointing Commissioners in several
(f the Provinces in the Colony of New Zea-
land for the purpose of receiving Articles, the
produce or manufacture of the said Colony, and
of selecting and transmitting to London such
articles as may be thought worthy of exposition
in the said International Exhibition, and of
communicating with Her Majesty's Commis-
sioners in England respecting such transmission,
And whereas it is expedient that the persons
hereunder mentioned should be also appointed
as Commissioners for the Province of Nelson
in addition to those already appointed by the
said recited Commission, Now know ye, that I,
Thomas Gore Browne, Governor of the said
Colony, have thought fit to appoint, and by these
presents do constitute and appoint, the persons
hereunder mentioned in addition to those
already appointed by the said Commission, to
be Commissioners in the Province of Nelson
for the purposes above mentioned, viz.,
DAVID MONRO,
THOMAS RIDGE HACKETT,
HENRY ADAMS,
MAXWELL BURY.
HENRY REDWOOD.
And I do by these presents give and grant
to the above persons, in conjunction with those
already appointed as aforesaid, or any two or
more of them, full power and authority to carry
into effect the purposes of the said Commission
by all lawful means whatsoever.

Appointment of certain Persons to consider
objections made against the issue of a Patent
to John Probert.
By His Excellency Colonel THOMAS
GORE BROWNE, Companion of
the Most Honorable Order of the
Bath, Governor and Commander-
in-Chief in and over Her Majesty's
Colony of New Zealand and its
Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral
of the same, &c., &c., &c.
WHEREAS John Probert, of Auckland,
has applied for Letters Patent under
the "Patents Act, 1860," for an invention for
making Flax from the Phormium Tenax, and
has delivered the descriptions, specifications,
drawings and other things, and given the no-
tices in manner required by the said Act; And
whereas George Cole, of Papakura, within the
time and in manner set forth in the said recited
Act, has objected to the issue of such Letters
Patent to the said John Probert on the grounds
following, that is to say :-
First," That for years he (Mr. Cole) has
been making flax on the same prin-
ciples."
Secondly," That Mr. Augustus Bell is
now making it on the same principles."
Thirdly," That the principle of Mr. Pro-
bert's machine is the same as his (Mr.
Cole's) in the formation of the revolving
wheel armed with iron called beaters,
or scrapers, or knives."
Fourthly," That his (Mr. Cole's) inven-
tion is the same as he claims in the
action of the armed wheels against
wooden or iron blocks."
Fifthly, -That his (Mr. Cole's) invention is
the same as he claims in the action of
the feed rollers pushing the leaf of flax
between the armed wheels and wooden
block."
Sixthly," That his (Mr. Cole's) invention
is the same as he claims in the use of
the endless band for conveying away
the prepared fibre from the machine."
And the said George Cole has deposited the
sum of Ten pounds as required by the said Act;
Now therefore I, Thomas Gore Browne, the
Governor of the said Colony, do hereby appoint
CHARLES HEAPHY, and
HENRY JAMES MASTERS,
of Auckland, Esquires, to be the persons to
whom the investigation and consideration of
the aforesaid objections shall be referred, and I
do direct the said John Probert and the said
George Cole to attend before the said Charles
Heaphy and Henry James Masters at such
time and place as they the said Charles
Heaphy and Henry James Masters shall ap-
point; and I do further direct them, the said
Charles Heaphy and Henry James Masters, to
report to the Governor as aforesaid whether in
their opinion Letters Patent should issue to the
said John Probert for his aforesaid invention.
