Returns not yet received from the Chatham Islands. The estimated European Population in 1857 was: M. 38; F. 26; Total 64.
(a) By an Act of the General Assembly the Name of the Province of New Plymouth, has, from the 1st of January, 1859, been altered to “The Province of Taranaki.”
(b) Hawke's Bay formed part of the Province of Wellington until the 1st November, 1858, when it was established a new Province, under the provisions of “The New Provinces Act, 1858.”

Parliament sat at General Assembly House (nicknamed the 'Shedifice') in Auckland from 1854-1864, sharing the building with the Auckland Provincial Council.

Ironically the Upper House met on the lower story, and the Lower House on the upper story.
