Colonial Secretary's Office,
Auckland, 11th June, 1859.
HIS Excellency the Governor directs the
publication of the following Letter from
the Registrar-General, with the accompanying
Statistical Tables, for general information.
HENRY JOHN TANCRED,
(For the Colonial Secretary.)
Registrar-General's Office,
Auckland, June 7th, 1859.
SIR,—With the view of meeting a general
desire that certain results of the late Census
should be officially made public before the
period at which the Volume of Statistics for
1858, now in course of preparation, can be
completed, I have the honour to present
herewith a series of Tables which have been
compiled with the greatest practicable despatch
after the receipt of the Enumerators' Returns
from the various parts of the Colony. They
show the Number and Description of Houses,
and the Population classified according to Sex,
Age, and Domestic Condition; distinguishing
between the Principal Towns and the other
Parts of the respective Provinces, (except in
the case of Hawke's Bay, the Returns from
which do not, in their present form, admit of
this plan being carried out):—also, the Number
of Acres in Cultivation, specifying the chief
Crops, and the quantity of Land Fenced; and
the Numbers of Live Stock in the several Pro-
vinces. Similar particulars of Stewart's Island
are added, the only wanting District being
the Chatham Islands, from which Returns have
not yet been received, but the estimated Euro-
pean Population of which in 1857 did not amount
to more than sixty-four. The branches of the
Census thus included are believed to be those
on which there is the most prevalent wish to
be informed without the delay which, from
various causes, must attend a sufficiently
careful compilation of other results, (such as
those relating to Education, Places of Birth,
Religious Denominations, &c.,) throughout the
Colony.
It may be proper to observe, with respect to
the accompanying Abstracts, that, in a few
instances, explanations are required from some
of the Districts which may slightly alter the
figures. But any corrections that can thus be
called for, must be comparatively so trifling as
not to affect any practical uses to which the
Tables may be applied. Indeed the only
reason for alluding to this contingency here is
to guard against a possible doubt as to the
accuracy of the Tables, should the finally revised
figures which will appear in the Statistical
Volume not be found in full and precise
agreement with those now presented.
Comparative Tables are added, showing the
Numerical and Centesimal Increase of the
Population, and the Increase in Cultivation
and Live Stock respectively, in the septennial
period since the General Census of New Zea-
land in December 1851.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient servant,
JOHN B. BENNETT,
Registrar-General.
The Honorable
The Colonial Secretary,
&c., &c., &c.
