NOTICE OF HEARING.

Court of Claims,
Auckland, 5th September, 1857.

PURSUANT to the "Land Claims Settlement Act, 1856," the Claims specified in the
annexed Schedule will be investigated in open Court, at Russell, Bay of Islands, on
Monday, the 21st of September next, and following days, at which time and place the
Claimants and all parties interested are required to attend, with their witnesses and the original
deeds or documents relating to the respective Claims.

SCHEDULE.

Claimant. Where situated. Nature of Claim.
Charles Baker Waikare This was an original Land Claim No. 255, for 1212

acres at Waikare. Commissioners Richmond and
Godfrey reported 30th May 1842 in favour of
claimant for a grant of 872 acres. Four grants
amounting to 872 acres signed by Governor
FitzRoy on 29th May 1844, but subsequently can-
celled. On the 4th Nov. 1847 and 13th Nov. 1851
the claimant was informed Government would allow
maximum of 2560 acres on claims 255, 255a
and 255b, upon surveys being made. |
| Hugh Coolahan | Kororareka | This was a claim of W. D. Brind under an alleged
purchase from the Natives in 1839, and was not be-
fore the former Commissioners. Notified to Govern-
ment by W. D. Brind on 25th July 1846, but not heard.
Notification now put in by derivative claimant Coola-
han under the Act. |
| Catholic Mission (Right Rev.
Bishop Pompallier) | Waihihi | This was part of original Land Claim No. 391c. Com-
missioner Godfrey reported on the 26th Nov. 1842
in favour of the Catholic Mission for 60 acres at
Waihihi and Maiki. Grant for 59 acres at Maiki
(part of claim) issued by Governor Gore Browne
on the 11th Feb. 1856. |
| Henry Day | Bay of Islands | This was an original Land Claim No. 295, 295a, and
295b. No grant recommended by Commissioner
Godfrey 1st Dec. 1842, claimant not having paid
fees. In Sept. 1844 Governor FitzRoy promised an
investigation, but the claim was not gazetted for re-
hearing. Now admitted under the Act. |
| Benjamin E. Turner | Kororareka | This was an original Land Claim No. 233. Com-
missioner Godfrey reported on the 26th Nov. 1842
in favour of claimant for 7 acres under certain reser-
vations. Grant not yet issued. |
| Jane Clendon | Raurau | This was part of an original Land Claim No. 67 of D.
B. Cochrane. Commissioners Richmond and God-
frey reported 24th April 1843 in favour of Cochrane
for 1000 acres. Scrip for Β£800 part of the claim,
issued by Governor FitzRoy 6th July 1844. A grant
for 200 acres to D. B. Cochrane's daughter prepared
but not signed. |
| William Thomas Fairburn | Keri Keri | This was a Pre-emptive Land Claim under Certificate
No. 240. Reported on by Commissioner Matson
19th July, 1848. Disallowed by Governor Grey
25th July 1848. |
| William Benjamin Moores | Kororareka | This was an original Land Claim of Battersby and
Moores, Nos. 312 and 312a to 312d. Commissioner
Godfrey recommended no grant 1st Dec. 1842, the
claimants not having appeared. The excuse for non-
appearance admitted pending evidence at the Bay of
Islands. |
| Church Missionary Society | Te Puna | This was an original Land Claim No. 450. Commis-
sioner Godfrey reported 10th March 1844 in favor
of the Society for 80 acres. Further special Report
of Commissioners Godfrey and Richmond dated 29th
May 1843, on the whole of the Society's claims, not
acted on as regards this claim. |
