PROCLAMATION.

By His Excellency ROBERT FITZROY,
Esquire, Captain in Her Majesty's Royal
Navy, and Governor and Commander-in-
Chief in and over Her Majesty's Colony
of New Zealand and its Dependencies,
and Vice Admiral of the same, &c.,
&c., &c.

WHEREAS, by an Ordinance enacted by
the Governor of New Zealand, with
the advice and consent of the Legislative Coun-
cil, Session 3, No. 1, intituled "An Ordinance
for establishing a Supreme Court," the Gover-
nor of New Zealand is empowered, with the
advice of the Executive Council, by Proclama-
tion, from time to time, to divide the Colony
into Districts for the purposes of the said reci-
ted Ordinance, and the limits of such Districts
from time to time to alter, as occasion may
require.

Now I, the Governor, with the advice of the
Executive Council, in pursuance of the authority
aforesaid, do hereby proclaim and declare, that
for the purposes of the said Ordinance, the
Colony shall be divided into two Districts, to
be called the Northern and Southern Districts.

And that the Northern District shall include
all that portion of the Northern Island of New
Ulster lying to the northward of a line, commen-
cing from a point on the coast, two miles, in a
straight line, southward of the mouth of the river
Wairoa, in Hawke's Bay, thence in a straight line
to the highest summit of the mountain usually
called Tongarero, thence along the highest ridge
lying between that mountain and the summit of
Mount Egmont, from the summit of Mount
Egmont to the source of the Otumatea, and
along the middle of the Otumatua to the sea,
and also so much of the sea adjacent thereto as
lies within the jurisdiction of the Vice-Admiral
of New Zealand, and further that the said Dis-
trict shall comprise and include all those Islands
contiguous to the Colony of New Zealand, and
commonly known by the name of the "Chat-
ham Islands."

And that the Southern District shall include
all that portion of the said Island of New Ul-
ster which lies to the southward of the aforesaid
line, and also the whole of the Islands of New
Munster and New Leinster, together with so
much of the sea adjacent thereto as lies within
the jurisdiction of the Vice-Admiral of New
Zealand.

And whereas by the said recited Ordinance the
Governor is also empowered to assign to each of
such Districts a Judge, or Judges, who shall
have within the same all the powers and juris-
diction thereby given to the Supreme Court.

NOW THEREFORE I, the Governor, in pur-
suance of such authority, do hereby proclaim
and declare that I have assigned to the North-
ern District,

WILLIAM MARTIN, Esquire,
Chief Justice of the said Court;

and to the Southern District,

HENRY SAMUEL CHAPMAN, Esquire,
a Judge of the said Court.

And whereas it is provided by the said recited
Ordinance, that there shall be holden Circuit
Courts for the despatch of civil and criminal
business of the Court, before one of the Judges
thereof, at such places and at such times as the
Governor shall, with the advice of the Executive
Council, by Proclamation from time to time
appoint.

NOW THEREFORE I, the Governor, with the
advice of the Executive Council, do hereby
proclaim and appoint, that twice in every year,
that is to say, on the first day of October in
this present year, and on the first of April, and
on the first day of October, in every succeeding
year, or as soon after each of the said days
respectively, as conveniently may be, a Circuit
Court shall be holden at Nelson, before the said
Henry Samuel Chapman, Esquire.
