PROCLAMATION.

By His Excellency WILLOUGHBY SHORT-
LAND, Esq., Colonial Secretary of Her
Majesty's Colony of New Zealand and
its Dependencies, the Officer Administer-
ing the Government of the same.

WHEREAS, by Her Majesty's Royal
"Charter for erecting the Colony of
New Zealand, and for creating and establishing
a Legislative Council and an Executive Council,
and for granting certain powers and authorities
to the Governor, for the time being, of the said
Colony," bearing date the 16th day of No-
vember. 1840: it is provided, That in the event
of the death, or absence out of the said Colony
of New Zealand, of such person as may be ap-
pointed to be Governor thereof, all and every
the powers and authorities therein granted to
the Governor of New Zealand, shall be vested
in the Lieutenant Governor of the said Colony;
or in the event of there being no Lieutenant
Governor, the said powers and authorities are,
by the said Charter, granted to the Colonial
Secretary, for the time being, of the said Colony;
and it is provided, that such Colonial Secretary
shall have all such powers and authorities until
Her Majesty's further pleasure shall be signified
therein.

And whereas, His Excellency Captain HOBSON,
Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the said
Colony, hath this day departed this life. Now,
therefore, I, the Colonial Secretary of New
Zealand, do hereby proclaim and declare, that
I have this day assumed all such powers and
authorities as are granted to the Governor of
New Zealand by the said Charter, and I hereby
call upon all persons to be aiding and assisting
me in the exercise thereof.

Given under my Hand and Seal, at Auckland,
this tenth day of September, in the year of
Our Lord One thousand eight hundred and
forty-two.

the Government of Her Majesty's Colony
of New Zealand, and its Dependencies,
and Vice Admiral of the same, &c., &c.

WHEREAS by letters patent, under the
Great Seal of the High Court of Ad-
miralty of England, bearing date the thirteenth
day of March, one thousand eight hundred and
forty-one, Her Majesty was graciously pleased,
to ordain, constitute, and depute WILLIAM
HOBSON, Esq., Captain in Her Majesty's Royal
Navy, and in the event of his absence, the
Officer administering the Government of the
said Colony, for the time being Her Majesty's
Vice Admiral, Commissary, and Deputy in the
Office of Vice Admiralty in her Colony of
