WILLOUGHBY SHORTLAND.

Colonial Secretary's Office,
Russell, Dec. 24th., 1840.

HIS Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor directs it to be notified for the benefit of all Parties concerned, that the Tract of Country contained within the Boundaries hereafter described, and immediately surrounding the Town of Auckland and the River and Harbour of Waitemata, will be reserved by the Crown, (without prejudice to the Rights of the Natives.) And that all European Claims to Land, within the limits of such Reserve, whose claims may be admitted by the Commissioners, will be compensated in the manner provided for by the 4th. of Victoria, No. 7.

The Boundaries of the above-mentioned Reserve (as nearly as they can be at present described) are as follow.

On the North and East — The sea coast from Tofino Bay to the entrance of the River of Waitemata, from thence the southern shore of the Tamaki Strait to the head of Mangerora Bay, then by a stream extending "south or south-east" to its source, from thence—by a line to the head of a small stream running into the Manukau, and by that stream and the northern shore of the harbour of Manukau, to the Native portage or dragging-place from Manukau to the Waitemata.

On the South-west and West — By that Portage to a Creek on which it terminates, running into "Trent Bay," Waitemata; by that Creek to its junction with another Creek, which extends in a direction south-west, west, and then north to its source; from thence by a line across the Range to another small Creek, being a tributary of the upper part of the Waitemata, from thence by that Creek and by the Waitemata, to a large Creek or Estuary extending northward; then by that Creek to its source, and by a line across the dividing Range to another stream, which disembogues in "Tofino Bay."

All Parties interested in obtaining further Information on this subject, may apply to the Surveyor-General.

It is further notified by Command of His Excellency, that the Crown will reserve to itself the right of withholding all grants of Land to European Claimants, on any of the Islands, Headlands, Rocks, or Islets, within, or adjacent to, the Frith of Thames; should such Claims be found to interfere with any Land, or portions of Land, on the said Islands, Headlands, Rocks, or Islets, which are or may probably be required for Public purposes.

By His Excellency's Command,
WILLOUGHBY SHORTLAND.
