WITH reference to the Regulations for
settlement of the Land Claims under
the 10s. and 1d. an Acre Proclamations, as
modified by the Minute of His Excellency
the Governor-in-Chief to the Legislative
Council, August 7, 1847, His Excellency
has been pleased to direct the following Extract
from Lord Grey’s despatch to be published
for general information.

"Under all the circumstances of the case,
therefore, and relying on the prudence, judg-
ment, and ability which have distinguished
your general administration, I have not
hesitated to advise Her Majesty to sanction
the issue of the Crown Titles which you have
given to the Claimants."

ceived from the Right Honorable the Secre-
tary of State for the Colonies.

Sir,
With reference to my despatch No. 51,
of the 7th instant, I transmit herewith addi-
tional instructions, which the Queen has been
pleased to issue under Her Majesty’s Sign
Manual and Signet, for repealing the sixth
section of the fourteenth Chapter of Her
Majesty’s instructions to yourself, respecting
the Aborigines of New Zealand.

Additional Instructions to Our Governor-
in-Chief of New Zealand, or to the
Officer exercising the said Office of
Governor-in-Chief for the time
being; To Our Governor and Com-
mander-in-Chief, in and over the
Province of New Ulster, or to the
Officer exercising the said Office of
Governor and Commander-in-Chief
for the time being; To Our Gover-
nor and Commander-in-Chief in
and over the Provinces of New
Munster, or to the Officer exercising
the said Office of Governor and
Commander-in-Chief for the time
being; Or to Our Lieutenant-Gover-
nor of the Province of New
Ulster, or to the Officer exercising
the said Office of Lieutenant-Gover-
nor for the time being; Or to Our
Lieutenant-Governor of the Pro-
vince of New Munster, or to the
Officer exercising the said Office for
the time being. Given at Our
Court at Buckingham Palace, this
fourteenth day of July, 1848, in the
Twelfth Year of Our Reign.
WHEREAS, in pursuance of an Act of
Parliament made and enacted in the
ninth and tenth years of Our Reign, entitled
"An Act to make further provision for the
Government of the New Zealand Islands,"
We did by certain Letters Patent, under the
Great Seal of Our United Kingdom, bearing
date at Westminster, the twenty-eighth day of
December, one thousand eight hundred and
forty-six, in the Tenth Year of Our Reign,
execute certain of the powers in Us, by the
said Act vested; And Whereas, in further
pursuance of the said Act, and in exercise of
the powers thereby in Us vested, and in exer-
cise of all and every other the powers in Us
in that behalf vested, We did further issue
certain Instructions under Our Sign Manual
and Signet approved in Our Privy Council,
being the Instructions accompanying or re-
ferred to in such Letters Patent, as relation
being had unto the said Letters Patent and
Instructions will more fully and at large ap-
pear; And Whereas it is directed by the
Sixth Section of the Fourteenth Chapter of
the said Instructions, being the chapter en-
titled "Respecting the Aborigines of New
Zealand," that "in cases arising between the
aboriginal inhabitants of New Zealand alone,
beyond the limits of the said aboriginal dis-
tricts, and in whatever relates to the rela-
tions to, and the dealing of such aboriginal
inhabitants with each other beyond the same
limits—the Courts and Magistrates of the
entire Province, or of the district in which
such cases may arise, shall enforce such native
laws, customs, and usages as aforesaid." And
Whereas by the said recited Act it is enacted
that it shall be lawful for Us from time to
time to amend, and for that purpose to add
to, or if necessary to repeal any such Instruc-
