HIS Excellency the Governor-in-Chief, has been pleased to direct that the following Extract from a despatch of Lord Grey’s, should be published in the Government Gazette.

"Downing Street,
3rd May, 1848.

Sir,

You will inform Te Whero Whero, and other Chiefs of the Waikato District, who signed the letter to the Queen, enclosed in your despatch of November 18th, 1847, No. 117, that I have laid it before Her Majesty, who has commanded me to express the satisfaction with which she has received this loyal and dutiful address, and to assure them that there is not the slightest foundation for the rumours to which they allude, and that it never was intended that the Treaty of Waitangi should be violated by dispossessing the Tribes which are parties to it of any portion of the land secured to them by the Treaty without their consent. On the contrary Her Majesty has always directed that the Treaty should be most scrupulously and religiously observed."
