Colonial Secretary's Office.
Wellington, 17th November, 1852.
the publication of the following Table for general information.
By His Excellency's command,
ALFRED DOMETT,
Colonial Secretary.
DISTRICT AVAILABLE FOR DEPASTURAGE PURPOSES.
| No. of Sheep the whole is estimated to carry. | No. of stockowners at present occupying the Block. | Average Acres to each. | Average Sheep to each. | REMARKS. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4,200 | This is the upper part of the valley of the Wairau. It lies about 3,000 feet above the level of the sea. The snow has laid on it many days together this winter. | |||
| 38,353 | 8 | 14,353 | 4,794 | A part also of Mr. Duppa's run is in this block, and a reserve for sheep & cattle travelling. Mr. Christie has the principal part of this block, which is now fully stocked. The lower part of this block near the Waihopai will carry about one sheep to two acres, but the upper part near the Branch river will hardly carry one sheep to four acres: the country here becomes highly rocky and barren. |
| 37,384 | 7 | 13,350 | 5,340 | The northern and western parts of this block are high mountains, very rocky and craggy: it is hard to define where the boundaries of the block should be placed in these directions. |
| 64,506 | 10 | 9,676 | 6,450 | This block is perhaps the best in the whole district, the hills being lower, the climate better, and accessibility to place of shipment greater. |
| 35,580 | 6 | 8,895 | 5,900 | The hills in this block are low and undulating, and the grass rich. |
| 38,725 | 9 | 12,703 | 4,303 | The lower part of this block is about 8 miles wide for a distance of about six miles with rich grass, the remainder is a narrow valley with hardly any flat land in it. The breadth of the valley for pasturage purposes here cannot be above 2 or 2½ miles. The snow also lies here for days together, the elevation above the sea being considerable, the grass becomes very inferior as the valley is ascended. |
| 46,080 | This block is only divided amongst three licenses, one in partnership by Messrs. Clifford and Weld. The latter is the largest run in this district, and fully comes up to the maximum allowed by the regulations, it may perhaps exceed it, but not by much. The southern part of this block, near the Wai-au-toa, is occupied by Mr. Trolove, and is a very rough country. |
