The Council met pursuant to adjournment.
The Rev. the Colonial Chaplain read prayers.
The minutes of the last meeting read and confirmed.
Mr. Dillon Bell moved the order of the day for the second reading of Building Societies Bill.
Motion seconded by the Attorney General of New Zealand and adopted.
Bill read a second time accordingly.
On the motion of Mr. Bell, Council in committee on this Bill.
Clauses 1 to 11 inclusive read, amended, and agreed to, when Council resumed.
On the motion of the Colonial Secretary of New Munster, Naturalization Bill further considered in committee.
The Attorney General of New Zealand moved the insertion of an additional clause.
Motion seconded by the Attorney General of New Munster and adopted.
Schedule amended, when Council resumed.
Report brought up and adopted.
The Attorney General of New Zealand having postponed the motion standing in his name, and Mr. Dillon having withdrawn the motion for a return and map,
The Colonial Secretary of New Munster moved Council in committee on Census Bill.
Motion adopted and Bill committed.
Schedule amended and agreed to, when Council resumed and report being brought up, adopted.
The Attorney General of New Zealand gave notice that to-morrow he should move—
That the standing rules relative to the printing of a Bill in duplicate on parchment, previously to the motion for its third reading, be suspended for this occasion, in order to move the third reading of Provincial Councils Ordinance, which it had been found expedient to have engrossed.
Also, that he should move for—
Copies of any correspondence between Her Majesty’s Government and the Canterbury Association, on the subject of the appointment of Justices of the Peace, and other officers for the settlement of Canterbury.
Mr. Dillon Bell gave notice that to-morrow he should move Council in committee on Building Societies Bill.
His Excellency then adjourned the Council at four o’clock, p.m., to Wednesday, the 9th day of July, at two o’clock.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 9.

On the motion of the Attorney General of New Zealand it was resolved—
That the clause of the standing rules which directs a Bill to be printed in duplicate on parchment previously to the motion for its third reading, be suspended on this occasion, in order to move the third reading of Provincial Councils Ordinance, which had been engrossed on parchment instead of having been printed thereon.
The Attorney General of New Zealand then moved, seconded by the Attorney General of New Munster, that the Provincial Councils Ordinance be read a third time, and that it do pass.
Motion adopted and Ordinance read a third time and passed.
The Attorney General of New Zealand moved for—
A copy of any correspondence between Her Majesty’s Government and the Canterbury Association on the subject of the appointment of Justices of the Peace and other officers for the settlement of Canterbury.
His Excellency, in reply, laid on the table a despatch on the subject.
On the motion of Mr. Bell, Council in Committee on Building Societies Bill.
Clauses 12, 13, 14, 16 and 17 read, amended, and agreed to, when Council resumed.
On the motion of the Attorney General of New Zealand, seconded by the Attorney General of New Munster, Crown Lands Amendment Bill read a first time.
The Attorney General of New Zealand gave notice that on Friday next he should move the second reading of this Bill.
Mr. Bell gave notice that on Friday next he should move Council in committee on Building Societies Bill.
The Colonial Treasurer gave notice that on Friday he should move the third reading of Marriage Amendment Ordinance.
His Excellency then adjourned the Council at half-past three o’clock to Friday, the 11th day of July, at two o’clock.
