JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS

IN THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL,

OF THE ISLANDS OF NEW ZEALAND.

Wellington, Thursday, May 29, 1851.

Present—

His Excellency Sir George Grey, K.C.B., Governor-in-Chief.

His Excellency Edward John Eyre, Lieutenant-Governor of New Munster.

And the Members as on Monday the 19th instant.

The Council met pursuant to adjournment.

The Minutes of the last meeting read and confirmed.

His Excellency the Governor-in-Chief laid on the table, "A Bill to authorize the Governor to apply a portion of the Land Fund arising within a Municipal district, at the instance of the Corporation thereof,"

"A Bill for taking the Census of the Islands of New Zealand."

The Attorney-General, agreeable to notice, moved the first reading of Debtors Bill.

Motion seconded by the Colonial Treasurer, adopted, and bill read a first time accordingly.

Mr. Hickson moved, agreeable to notice, seconded by Captain Smith, the first reading of Customs Bill.

Motion adopted, and bill read a first time accordingly.

On the motion of the Colonial Secretary, seconded by the Attorney-General, "Naturalization Bill" read a first time.

On the motion of the Colonial Treasurer, seconded by the Colonial Secretary, "Marriage Amendment Ordinance Bill" read a first time.

Col. M’Clevert gave notice that at the next meeting of Council he should move the first reading of "Land Fund Appropriation Bill."

Captain Smith gave notice that at the next meeting of Council, he should move the first reading of "New Zealand Company’s Land Claimants Bill."
