No. 11. An Ordinance to abate the Dog Nuisance. (9th June, 1849.)

Which Ordinances having, in accordance with the requirements of Clause 11 of the "Provincial Councils Ordinance," been referred to the Governor-in-Chief, and some thereof have now received His Excellency’s assent:

Given under my hand, and issued under the Public Seal of the Province of New Munster, in the Islands of New Zealand, at Government House, at Wellington, this ninth day of October, in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine.

WITH REFERENCE to the advertisement which appeared in the Government Gazette of the 19th June last, His Excellency THE LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR directs it to be notified that the Road to the Wairarapa through the Valley of the Hutt and over the Rimutaka Range has been reopened for the passage of Cattle, &c., during the summer season, and until further notice.

HIS EXCELLENCY THE LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR directs it to be notified that those persons who, in erecting fences on lands in the Upper Valley of the Hutt, have encroached on any portion of the new line of road in that locality, or who have not kept such fences, at least half a chain from the centre of the roadway, will be recommended to the Government for any damage they may sustain from the burning off of the scrub brushwood, &c., accumulated along the roadways, which will take place next month.

THE HEADS of the several religious denominations in this Province named in Ordinance of Council No. 10, of Session 5, are hereby requested to transmit to this Office, on or before the 1st of January 1850, a list of all Teachers employed in connection with their Churches, in instructing Aboriginal Natives or Half-Castes in Schools, distinguishing Native from European Scholars; the localities at which such Teachers are stationed; their names; and the dates of the commencement of their labours and daily instructions, at such Schools; together with the average attendance of Native or Half-Caste children at each School; separately specified, attending at end-School for the three months previous to the date of the return.

These returns are required in order that a sum of Five Hundred Pounds, which has been recommended to be appropriated by the Executive Council of this Province under the “Education Ordinance” for the benefit of Aboriginal Natives and Half-Castes only, may be allocated to the several denominations proportionately by the Council amongst the bodies of the denominations.

N.B. Government Schools, or Teachers of Sunday Schools only, to be included in the return, but only Day Schools and Daily Schools.

Separating Schools ought to be classed separately, and the same particulars stated as are required with regard to Day Schools; and referees in relation to the subject.

THE UNDERSIGNED will be received at this office, with tenders addressed to the Colonial Secretary, for furnishing the Local Government with the undermentioned articles:

  • Nine bolts No. 5 Canvas, or 360 yards
  • One piece strong Duck, 40 yards
  • Twenty fathoms of 3 inch Eurona Rope
  • Forty yds. of 5/8 inch do. do.
  • Thirty do. ½ inch do. do.
  • 120 yards of Canvas No. 7 or 8
  • 120 do. 1 Cor. do.
  • 120 do. do. 1 Cor. do. do.
  • One piece of Tarpaulin, 50 yards
  • Two Chains of 3.16 inch, 75 fathoms each
  • One Cooking Apparatus, 15 inches dia. of 15 gallons capacity

The tenders to be sealed, and to be delivered to the Colonial Secretary’s office, on or before Thursday, the 1st day of November next.

Further particulars, if required, may be obtained on application at the Harbour Master’s Office.
