METEOROLOGICAL TABLE for Wellington during the Quarter ending the 31st of December, 1848 :-

PERIOD. North and N.W. Winds. South and S.E. Winds. Variable Winds. RAIN. REMARKS.
From Oct. 1, to 31. 10 days. 11 days. 10 days. 12 days. This quarter has been characterised by a more than usual occurrence of earthquakes, being both frequent and severe. At the period of the 1st and 3rd great shocks on the 16th and 19th of October, the wind was blowing a hard gale from the S.E., accompanied by heavy rain, barometer low, and mercury still falling. The second shock occurred on the 17th of October, when it was calm with very fine but sultry weather. The tide at this time rose about 18 inches higher than ordinary springs, but whether this was to be attributed to the earthquake or southerly gale, it is difficult to determine; I am, however, disposed to favour the former cause, never having previously observed the water so high in the harbour during the prevalence of strong southerly winds. Since the above date to the present time earthquakes have been felt with few exceptions daily.
From Nov. 1, to 30. 18 days. 2 days. 10 days. 17 days.
From Dec. 1, to 31. 20 days. 1 day. 10 days. 8 days.
Total in 92 days 48 14 30 37

HARBOUR MASTER.
