PROROGATION OF COUNCIL.

SPEECH of his Honor the Superintendent on the Prorogation of the Twenty-third Session of the Nelson Provincial Council, on the 13th June, 1873.

MR SPEAKER AND GENTLEMEN OF THE PROVINCIAL COUNCIL :—

I have assented, on behalf of his Excellency the Governor, to the following Acts passed in your present session.

An Act to amend the Nelson Highways Act 1872.

An Act to amend the Impounding Act 1861.

An Act to amend the Cattle Trespass Act.

An Act to amend the Education Act 1863.

An Act to constitute Districts within the Nelson Goldfields, and to appropriate a portion of the Provincial Revenue to the making and maintaining of Public Works therein.

An Act to appropriate the Revenue of the Province of Nelson for the year ending the thirty-first day of March, One thousand eight hundred and seventy-four.

I have reserved the following Act for the signification of his Excellency's pleasure thereon :—

An Act to alter the Electoral districts and numbers of members of the Provincial Council of Nelson.

I trust that the various measures you have passed granting local control over the appropriation of a fixed proportion of revenue locally raised to the inhabitants of the goldfields, giving increased representation in your Council to those districts, and amending the Education Act, will be productive of beneficial effects by removing causes of disunion amongst the people of the province.

The resolutions you so cordially agreed to in reference to the construction of a railway through the heart of the Province, from Foxhill to Brunnerton, were imme-

The Nelson Provincial Council Buildings (depicted) were constructed beginning with the laying of the foundation stone on 26 August 1859, with the first Council meeting held there on 30 April 1861.

The buildings served Nelson for over a century before being demolished on 12 September 1969.
