Superintendent's Office, Nelson,
10th October, 1870.

NOTICE is hereby given that the Superintendent has refused to grant a Goldmining Lease applied for by HENRY FRANCIS, JOHN KEETING, and JOHN JAMES, for the land hereinafter described, viz.:—

A block of land, containing eight acres two roods twenty-six perches, more or less, situated at Darkie's Creek, Back Lead, Charleston.

PROTECTION is hereby granted until the 31st day of October, 1871, under the provisions of "The Goldfields Act 1866," to JOHN MAUNDER LANGDON, for the right of ferrying across the Grey and Arnold Rivers for a distance of two miles from and above the junction of the said rivers; and he is hereby authorised to charge fares as per schedule, on the following conditions:—

  1. That good safe boats and competent ferrymen shall be at all times in attendance.

  2. That all Government officers, including police, road-overseers, postmen, and laborers, when on duty, shall be ferried across the rivers free of charge.

  3. That the Warden of the district may, on being satisfied that the ferry is not conducted in an efficient manner, and in accordance with these conditions, suspend the operation of this protection until the matter of complaint be removed, and if the matter of complaint be not removed within a reasonable time, the Superintendent shall have power to cancel this protection.

  4. That all regulations which may at any time be brought into force under section 13 of "The Goldfields Act 1866," shall be deemed applicable to this license, as if it had been granted under the same.

  5. That this protection shall not be transferred without the sanction of the Superintendent.

  6. That this protection shall not affect the right of the Government to erect or grant protection for any bridge within the protected limits.

PROTECTION is hereby granted for Six Months from 1st October instant, under the provisions of "The Goldfields Act 1866," to THOMAS BRADLEY, for the right of ferrying across Fox's River for a distance of half a mile from the mouth of the river; and he is authorised to charge from 1st October, 1870, to 31st March, 1871, fares as per Schedule, on the following conditions:—

  1. That a good safe boat and competent ferryman shall be at all times in attendance.

  2. That Government officers on duty shall be ferried free of charge.

  3. That this protection shall not be transferred without the sanction of the Superintendent.

  4. That this protection shall not affect the right of the Government to erect or grant protection for any bridge within the protected limits.

DANIEL M'LEOD, of Westport, in the Province of Nelson, Contractor, having been authorised under Clause XIII. of "The Goldfields Act 1866," to construct a Wharf on the North Bank of the Buller River, opposite Kennedy-street, is hereby authorised to charge not exceeding the undermentioned Tolls on the said Wharf, for a period of Five Years from the first day of October, One thousand eight hundred and seventy, on the following terms and conditions.

  1. The said Daniel M'Leod shall maintain the said wharf in good repair and condition during the said term, and pay a rental of five pounds per annum to the Warden of the district, or to some other person authorised by the Superintendent to receive the same.

  2. The wharf shall be subject to the provisions of the Harbor Regulations which may from time to time be in force in the Buller River.

  3. Should the Government consider it necessary for the construction of protective works, or for any other public purpose, the Superintendent shall have power to cancel this protection at any time; and the said Daniel M'Leod shall, in that case, be paid the value of the wharf at the time of such cancellation, but the said Daniel M'Leod shall not be entitled to compensation beyond the actual value of the structure, which will be ascertained in the usual way.

  4. The Warden of the district shall have power, on being satisfied that the wharf is not maintained in a good state of repair, or that any of the above conditions have not been carried out, to suspend the operation of this protection until the matter of complaint be removed, and if not removed within a reasonable time the Superintendent may cancel this protection.

  5. In the event of this protection being cancelled under the provisions of clause 4 hereof, the
