Nelson, 15th July, 1869.

MESSRS. COOK and OWENS are hereby protected under Section XIII, of "The Goldfields Act, 1866," in the sole right of Ferrying on that part of the Ahaura river lying between a point three miles up the stream from the township of Ahaura and a point two miles further up the river, for a period of One Year, from the 1st day of June, 1869, and are authorised to charge Tolls, as per Schedule, on the following conditions:β€”

  1. That a good safe Boat and competent Ferryman shall be at all times in attendance at the Ferry.

  2. That the rate of Tolls, according to Schedule, shall be charged only until the 31st December, 1869, and should there be any considerable increase in the traffic, the rate of Tolls shall after that date be reduced to such amount as may be considered fair and reasonable by the Warden of the District.

  3. That all Government officers on duty, including road overseers, laborers, and postmen, shall be ferried across the river free of charge.

  4. That the Warden of the District shall, on being satisfied that the Ferry is not conducted in an efficient manner, and in accordance with these conditions, have power to suspend the operation of this protection until the matter of complaint be removed.

  5. That this protection shall not be transferred without the consent, in writing, of the Warden of the District.

IT is hereby notified that it is intended, after the expiration of two months from the date hereof, to grant Leases for Gold Mining Purposes of the Crown Land within the District of the Nelson South Goldfields, hereinafter described, viz :β€”

  1. A Block of Land containing Four Acres and Seventeen Perches, more or less, situated at Stoney Lead, Candlelight Flat, near Charleston, applied for by ROGER WALKER and others (Galatea Ground Sluicing Company).

  2. A Block of Land containing Nine Acres, Three Roods, and Twenty-six Perches, more or less, situated at Dawson's and Boatman's Terraces, near Charleston, applied for by JOHN SHEARER and others (Prospect Gold Mining Company).
