REPORT OF THE INSPECTOR OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
To DONALD SINCLAIR, Esq., Chairman of the Central Board of Education.
SIR,βI have not, on this occasion, adopted the plan pursued in my last Report, according to which the exact state of each of the Provincial Schools was particularised. I feel that not only would such a course, if too frequently repeated, lose much of its effect, but that the urgent necessity which then called for it no longer exists. And I have great pleasure in recording my sense of the promptitude with which the Local Committees have generally responded to the appeal so pointedly made to them. In consequence of the strictures that I last year deemed it my duty to make on the inefficient way in which several of our most important schools were conducted, several dismissals have taken place, while, in other cases, teachers have received warning from their committees that unless a reformation were effected within a specified time, a change of masters must be made.
I have no hesitation in affirming that teachers better qualified for their work have invariably succeeded to the places thus left vacant, and that, in two notable instances, a marked improvement has taken place in the schools where a further probationary period has been granted to the masters.
