REPORT OF THE HOSPITAL SURGEONS FOR THE YEAR ENDING MARCH 31, 1865.

THE HOSPITAL.

THE private house hitherto used as a Hospital, has, up to the present time, been made to meet the wants of the small number of patients from the town and agricultural population, requiring its aid.

Within the last year the natural increase of population, and the influx of gold-diggers to the Wakamarina and West Coast have greatly augmented the applicants for admission, and it no longer provides sufficient accommodation; several very severe cases of fever and other diseases having been lately under treatment; it has become apparent that the rooms of the old house do not contain a sufficient cubic space for the maintenance of pure air for more than one patient in each while none of them contain 1,500 cubic feet, the smallest space allowed for rooms containing one bed, where due regard has had to sanitary precautions.

Some months since, a circular memorandum, drawn up by order of the Duke of Newcastle, was forwarded to this and other Provinces by the Colonial Secretary, defining the standard to which Colonial Hospitals and Asylums ought to attain, and a memorandum in reply was forwarded to his Honor the late Superintendent, in which the deficiencies and requirements of the Nelson Hospital were set forth in detail.
